Books have been a part of my life from a very young age . I'm currently being ruled over by 3 cats (Rafferty, Bodhi Rook & Yersinia Pestis), who I can mostly get not to chew on book covers. Lately, I'll read anything, though Science Fiction and Romance will always be on the bottom of the pile.

There is nothing a dragon loves more than gold, except for maybe bread.

The Bakery Dragon by Devin Elle Kurtz

August 16, 2025 by bjornsnipe 1 Comment

I had a plan when I went into my LBS; grab the four books I had gone there specifically for, pay, and get out. And then I saw this book and I couldn’t resist. I have a soft spot for dragons, and a weakness for beautiful children’s book illustrations; I didn’t even look inside. (I also picked up two greeting cards to use as bookmarks because they were hysterical, but they don’t factor much into this review. Suffice to say, a card of Isaac […]

“Because We’re All Smart Cookies.”

The Smart Cookie by Jory John and Pete Oswald

August 16, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Total and complete honesty here: I only have this book because the woman at my local bookstore upsold it to me as I was already buying a different children’s book and the art was cute enough that I didn’t tell her no. The Smart Cookie is the fifth book (apparently) in the Food Group series; previous entries in the series consist of The Bad Seed, The Good Egg, The Cool Bean, and The Couch Potato. Being children’s books, the very, very cutesy titles are probably […]

“I wish I were a girl again, half-savage and hardy, and free.”

Fifteen Wild Decembers: A Novel by Karen Powell

August 16, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Fifteen Wild Decembers tells the story of the Brontë family through the eyes of Emily, from 1825 when she first goes away to school, to her death in 1848. From their childhood tales of the fantastical island of Gondal, to the events in their lives that shaped them and their literary outputs, Fifteen Wild December offered a glimpse into their lives. It was an alright book; I’d love to rate it any more warmly than that, but it didn’t really inspire much in me. I […]

For Duck's Sake: A Meg Langslow Mystery (#37) by Donna Andrews

August 16, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

The Meg Langslow series of cozy mysteries is set in the fictional town of Caerphilly, Virginia. Meg Langslow is a blacksmith (mostly decorative fences, planters, benches, andirons and like, with occasional swords) and personal assistant to the Mayor, Randall Shiffley. The Shiffley Clan runs most of Caerphilly, as they range from the mayor to the judge to the construction crew to the owners of the hottest BBQ joint to deputy on the police force (luckily, they use their powers for good, not evil, unlike the […]

Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab

“Bury my bones in the midnight soil, plant them shallow and water them deep, and in my place will grow a feral rose, soft red petals hiding sharp white teeth”   1532 Spain: Maria wants more out of life than to be stuck in her small village, and the combination of her great beauty and wily mind may be the ticket to get her out of there. When all it does is throw her into a man’s world of men’s games played by men’s rules, […]

“I was born and raised in San Francisco, which explains my willingness to stay in a city that’s historically been full of people who insist on trying to kill me at the slightest provocation.”

Once Broken Faith (October Daye #10) by Seanan McGuire

August 10, 2025 by bjornsnipe 1 Comment

Having survived the events of the last book, Toby decides a relaxing night is in order, or as relaxing of a night one can have hosting a sleepover for a bunch of Fae teenagers. All’s well and good until Arden comes over asking for a favor: the conclave to discuss whether or not the Elf-shot cure Walther invented in the last book is approaching, and High King Aethlin has forbidden the use of the cure until after the decision is made. Arden doesn’t want to […]
