Books have been a part of my life from a very young age . I'm currently being ruled over by 3 cats (Rafferty, Bodhi Rook & Yersinia Pestis), who I can mostly get not to chew on book covers. Lately, I'll read anything, though Science Fiction and Romance will always be on the bottom of the pile.

bjornsnipe's Reviews:

“It is a writer’s greatest pleasure to hear that someone was kept up until the unholy hours of the morning reading one of his books. It goes back to authors being terrible people who delight in the suffering of others. Plus, we get a kickback from the caffeine industry…”

Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians Book Six by Brandon Sanderson & Janci Patterson, illustrations by Hayley Lazo

August 23, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

This was a better book than the last two at least; I’d hate to have the series end at the level it was going, or even worse. It was an interesting concept to have the last book be from Bastille’s point of view so that you got someone else’s thoughts on the events at large, and seeing as Alcatraz spent most of this book moping, brooding, and pretty much catatonic, it wouldn’t have made a very enjoyable read anyway. I will say that with Janci […]

“It was the day my grandmother exploded.”

The Crow Road by Iain Banks

August 23, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

The Crow Road is about about Prentice McHoan’s preoccupation with death, sex, his relationship with his father, unrequited love, sibling rivalry, a missing uncle, cars, alcohol and other intoxicants, and God, against the background of the Scottish landscape. And doesn’t that just sound like so much fun? Or maybe just a Scottish take off on Nine’s “Folies Bergeres” Necrophorus: The trouble with Contini, he’s the king of mediocrities, A second-rate director who believes that he is Socrates. He never makes a “movie” or a “picture?” […]

Slamming My Head Into A Wall Would Have Hurt Less Than Reading This Book

Over a God's Dead Body: A Supernatural Comedy by Joel Spriggs

August 22, 2025 by bjornsnipe 6 Comments

When Dorothy Parker said “This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force”, she wasn’t talking about Atlas Shrugged, she was talking about Over a God’s Dead Body. Not only were there multiple grammatical errors, not only was the writing piss poor, but the plot, to put it bluntly, sucked. This read like the author and a bunch of the dudebros in his frat house/high school/ middle school playground/pick whichever group has the lowest maturity level, got […]

“As my squire, part of Quentin’s job is accompanying me when I do stupid stuff; it’s a learning experience. Most of what he’s learning is how to get blood out of his clothes, but hey, at least it’s educational.”

The Unkindest Tide (October Daye #13) by Seanan McGuire

Ah, the book where Toby should really learn to follow etiquette before opening doors. First it was Amandine, and that resulted in trauma for everyone in the household; now it’s the Luidheag, and that results in the calling in of debts. See, the Luidheag has decided it’s time for the Selkie to end and the Roane to exist again in greater numbers, and Toby is the only member of her family willing to put forth the necessary effort. The fact is (and I think it’s […]

“You lost a great deal of blood.” “I didn’t lose it,” I said. “I know exactly where it is.”

Night and Silence (October Daye #12) by Seanan McGuire

And another down. After being kicked in the teeth in the last book, Toby starts out this one in probably an even worse place. Jazz has PTSD, Tybalt is avoiding her, and neither she or May knows how to fix anything. Seriously, is this ‘gang up on Toby’ night? Can you let me know when you schedule these, so I can arrange to be somewhere else? Like, I don’t know, another Kingdom?” “Most other Kingdoms won’t let you in,” said Danny, almost reasonably. “You keep […]

“It was possible she’d been too focused on her need for another cocktail to realize we were witnessing one of the portents of the apocalypse. ”The Luidaeg is singing Disney songs.”

The Brightest Fell (October Daye #11) by Seanan McGuire

Boy, does this book start out on such a high note and then crash shortly thereafter. I absolutely loved Toby’s “Party With Friends to Celebrate Her Engagement to Tybalt” (I hate both the terms “bachelorette party” and “hen party”) at the local bar, especially when it entails the Luidheag singing Disney at the karoake machine. The music started. I felt the blood run out of my face, leaving me cold. “Oh, oak and ash,” I said. “This isn’t happening.” I wasn’t the only to have […]
