Books have been a part of my life from a very young age . I'm currently being ruled over by 3 cats (Rafferty, Bodhi Rook & Yersinia Pestis), who I can mostly get not to chew on book covers. Lately, I'll read anything, though Science Fiction and Romance will always be on the bottom of the pile.

bjornsnipe's Reviews:

“You don’t suppose they’re really expecting figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer,” I muttered. “I thought your history professor friend said that historically accurate wassail would be mulled beer.” “I’ll put on the coffee,” Michael said, heading downstairs. “I rather think that would be the suitable Southern Baptist equivalent.”

Five Golden Wings: A Meg Langslow Mystery (#38) by Donna Andrews

November 1, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

It’s Christmas in Caerphilly once again (no really; this is the 11th Christmas-themed book in a 38 book series), and Meg Langslow thought she had enough on her plate. But as usual, the Universe has decided that the old phrase “want something done, give it to a busy person” refers solely to Meg. So on top of the usual shopping, shoveling, being ground zero for the family gatherings, attending her husband’s one man Christmas Carol performance, and now dealing with her twins’ argument over the […]

“Vicar Roberts has become convinced there’s something unnatural in the neighborhood,” he said. “How strange. What might have led him to that belief?” “The bodies with no blood left in them, and the people with anemia, who all seem to have had vivid dreams involving bats. Things like that.”

A Night in the Lonesome October: a novel by Roger Zelazny, illustrated by Gahan Wilson

October 31, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Seeing as it’s October, I can’t let the month end without reading this book. I usually read it one chapter a night (there are 320 in total; one for each day of the month and a Prologue), but seeing as time got away from me this year, I wound up racing through it in one day. It may not be an overly long book, but it’s an enjoyable one. A Night in the Lonesome October tells the story of The Great Game, a sacred ritual […]

“ No, Charlie wanted to insist. People only love you if you make it worth their while. No one loves you once they see your weaknesses. No one loved your flaws. No one loves your ugly, broken parts. No one loves you and expects nothing more than your love in return.”

Thief of Night (The Charlatan Duology #2) by Holly Black

October 19, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Charlie Hall, glue trap for disaster, crooked from the day she was born, who’d never met a bad decision she wasn’t willing to double down on, may have finally met her match. After the events of the previous book, Charlie actually thought she’d won. She had managed to defeat Lionel Salt, and rescue her lover―the powerful shadow, Vince―back from under the noses of the powerful Cabal leaders, instead of Vince going to his cousin and Salt’s granddaughter, Adaline. Agreeing to become the Hierophant and risking […]

“It is finished. The tale is told truthfully, and truth is no heavier, no more beautiful than lies.”

The True Story of Hansel and Gretel: a novel of war and survival by Louise Murphy

October 19, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Trigger warnings: child mutilation, graphic murder, dismemberment, torture, grievous and graphic depictions of wounds, profanity, graphic descriptions of nudity (including children), graphic depictions of childbirth, gas chambers, mass cremations, talk of rape in general, rape of a child shown on page. In the last few months of the Nazi’s occupation of Poland, two children are abandoned by their father and stepmother to increase the chances of all of them surviving. Left to find safety in the dense Bialowieza Forest, the two, renamed “Hansel” and “Gretel” […]

“The ranks of society are once again filled with Ambitious Mamas, whose only aim is to see their Darling Daughters married off to Determined Bachelors”

Bridgerton: The Viscount Who Loved Me (Anthony’s Story) by Julia Quinn

October 18, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

(To be honest, I’d rate this 2 stars, except for the few characters I actually liked.) This Season all the gossip columnists have it wrong; London’s most elusive and desirable bachelor Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry—he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle to  making Edwina Sheffield into Lady Bridgerton is his intended’s  (can she be his intended if she doesn’t know he’s chosen her?) older sister, Kate—the most exasperating woman (he’s not related to) to ever grace a London ballroom. Kate will […]

“God cannot help when natural stupidity is driving the cart.”

The Alewives: A plague-era tale of murder, friendship, and fine ale (The Alewives of Colmar #1) by Elizabeth R. Andersen

October 18, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Colmar, 1353 CE Gritta, Appel, and Efi managed to survive the massive death toll of the Black Death, only to realize that day-to-day problems don’t end just because of a major epidemic (#relatable). Children still need feeding, husbands will still drink away all the money, and people die from more than the plague. With limited options (I mean, a woman can’t even “entertain” the local menfolk without getting shade from the local monastery) and lots of obstacles, they band together to become alewives – brewing […]
