Books have been a part of my life from a very young age . I'm currently being ruled over by 3 cats (Rafferty, Bodhi Rook & Yersinia Pestis), who I can mostly get not to chew on book covers. Lately, I'll read anything, though Science Fiction and Romance will always be on the bottom of the pile.

The Devil's Advisor by Brad Abdul

This book bills itself as “Horror Fiction” and “for fans of Good Omens“; and I think they were incredibly far off the mark on both counts. Other than it being set mostly in Hell I have no idea how it could be considered “Horror”, and the writing is in no way anywhere close to being even one-tenth as funny or well-written as Good Omens. Brian (the main character) is unlikable, or as unlikable as someone who has all the personality and character development cardboard can […]

“Have you ever thought what a God would be like who actually ordained and executed the cruelty that is in [the biblical Book of Revelation]? A holocaust of mankind. Yet so many of these Bible-men accept the idea without a second thought.”

Revelation by C.J. Sansom

This was probably the weirdest (and creepiest) book in the series so far. The motivation behind the murders is unfortunately still around today, and I enjoyed the Tudor take on the movie Seven (though having never seen the movie, I am just guessing at that comparison). I also appreciated how well-researched the book is, and how realistically all the characters are written; though Shardlake and his “crush on a woman who is going to kick him in the teeth” per book is starting to get […]

Well, I’ve gotten this far, why not just continue.

Hijack the Seas: Seismic (Cassie Palmer #13) by Karen Chance

June 8, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

How to sum up the thirteenth book in a series that has no end in sight? Okay, let me try: Cassandra Palmer, former ward of a vampire mobster, now Pythia, top seer in the world, Oracle of Delphi, is in the battle for her life. The daughter of a human mage and Artemis, aka Hel (because apparently all gods do double or triple duty with all world religions), Cassie has to stop Zeus/Odin and the other gods from breaking into our world and destroying everyone. […]

A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire

I’ve seen that mixture of resignation and hopelessness before; its usually in my mirror.   After the events of Rosemary and Rue, Toby is back once again in the service of Duke Sylvester Torquill, lord of the Duchy of Shadowed Hills (outside of San Francisco, in the Mt. Diablo area.). As much as she doesn’t want to be, it’s apparently once a hero, always a hero. I’m not a hero; if I’m lucky, I never will be. I just do my job Sent to help […]

Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

June 6, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

We’ve all seen a t-shirt, bumper sticker, mug or mouse pad with seem variation of the motto “Well-behaved women seldom make history”. I actually own a t-shirt, my mother had a bumper sticker on her Jeep Cherokee, and I think somewhere in a box shoved in one of my closets I might have a tote bag. What I didn’t know was that “well-behaved women seldom make history” was originally from a paper about Puritan women’s funeral sermons, or that it was coined by a Mormon […]

Conclave by Robert Harris

June 6, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

When the Pope dies, a Conclave is called to select the next Pope. Led by Jacopo Lomeli, the Dean of College, one hundred and eighteen Cardinals gather to decide who amongst them is best suited to obtain the Keys of Saint Peter. With an unexpected Cardinal appearing, and secrets abounding about some of the top contenders, how long will the Conclave last, and will they in end elect the best choice? I had seen the movie this book inspired before reading it, so I went […]
