Take My Life by Eddie Cantor with Jane Kesner Ardmore

February 6, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I really loved this memoir and it made me cry on the train, which is quite an achievement given how much I hate crying in public transit. I had never heard of Eddie Cantor before I picked this up randomly in a used bookstore due to the cover, but his dedication to charity fundraising and his kind nature come through very strongly in this book. He had raised over $280 million for charity at the time he wrote this (1957), which given inflation is just […]

We Swore to Meet in the Next Life and That's When Things Got Weird! (Vol. 1-3) by Hato Hachiya

February 6, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I got into grad school, hooray! It is such a relief and as a reward I went and bought myself a bunch more manga. I’ve been eyeing this series at the bookstore for a bit so I treated myself even if I think these are overpriced at $13 each for small volumes. We Swore to Meet in the Next Life and That’s When Things Got Weird! is an isekai style reincarnation romance. Princess Yuko and Harold the knight are in love but can’t be together […]

The Elementals by Michael McDowell

January 22, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

This is another Valancourt reissue Christmas gift to me and has a pull quote from Stephen King on the cover, which made me interested to read it. Poppy Z. Brite says on the back of the book that this is “surely one of the most terrifying novels ever written,” so I was ready to be scared. However, I didn’t honestly find it that scary and I felt like the racial politics distracted me from fully feeling immersed in the text. The Elementals is a Southern […]

Great Photography and Pivotal Days in History Captured for Posterity

A Day in the Life of Israel by David Cohen and Lee Liberman (Project Directors)

A Day in the Life of China by David Cohen (Project Director)

A Day in the Life of the Soviet Union by David Cohen and Rick Smolan (Project Directors)

January 21, 2024 by GentleRain 2 Comments

I stumbled across this series in a thrift store and picked up a couple because I love photojournalism and concept books like this. The Day in the Life series was apparently a big hit in the late 1980s/early 1990s, which passed me by completely somehow (in fairness to myself, I was either not born or a baby during this time). For each book, they would send a bunch of the world’s top photojournalists, as well as the best photographers from the host country, out on […]

“If you have thought seriously about mirrors, you will know about their mystery.”

Elizabeth by Ken Greenhall

January 21, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Elizabeth is a fairly short novel with spare prose that makes it a quick read, but Greenhall’s ability to evoke mood and tension makes it a strong novel. This was another Christmas gift Valancourt novel, and it’s been interesting to see that while I am not a fan of sci-fi around this time, I do tend to like horror novels from this era much better than modern ones. The mix of literary and genre here heightens the book as a whole. Elizabeth is a take […]

Great Documentary Photography of American Teenagers

It's Complicated: The American Teenager by Robin Bowman

January 11, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed this book of portraits and interviews with American teenagers. The portraits were taken over the course of four years, and each one has a short chunk of the interview Bowman did with her subjects. I love this kind of blend of photo and explanatory text instead a book of just solely photographs, so this was right up my alley. I also am always rooting for teenagers, as I feel that they are unfairly denigrated in our culture, so it was nice to […]
