FyreHaar's Reviews:

But where are the crows?

The Puzzle Wood by Rosie Andrews

June 24, 2025 by FyreHaar Leave a Comment

(Hello Team, I am posting a review in June!  This is months earlier than I usually do!) I picked this book up on vacation in Edinburgh. The cover has crows on it and it looked good enough. Spoiler – there are no crows in the book at all. Weak sauce. I do not read much mystery at all. The pitch of “governess goes to isolated mansion in woods and things are spoooooooky” seemed like a diverting way to spend much of the flight home.   […]

Oh Lois, you hold my heart so gently.

Komarr by Lois McMaster Bujold

April 20, 2024 by FyreHaar 1 Comment

So, you pick up a science fiction mystery novel by your favorite author. You know the one, who wrote your favorite character of all time? It’s another in her long, award winning series following Miles Naismith Vorkosigan through his life of adventure and mystery. (if you’ve read Bujold, you know why you never leave out Naismith in his name.) The soletta – the key to terraforming Komarr – has just been hit and almost catastrophically damaged by an ore freighter. Miles is a newly minted Imperial […]

The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls by Mona Eltahawy

December 19, 2023 by FyreHaar Leave a Comment

What are ways that women are not supposed to be? What are they not supposed to do? Mona Eltahawy interrogates social behavioral control of women and non-binary people through the framing of seven types of behavior that are understood to be in some way improper. Anger, Attention, Profanity, Ambition, Power, Violence, and Lust. In Seven Necessary Sins Elthawy asks one of the most important questions – Who does this benefit? The author argues not only that women and girls should engage in activities driven by […]

Thank you So-Far-Anonymous Benefactor!

December 4, 2022 by FyreHaar 1 Comment

Hola! It’s ye olde FyreHaar reporting from the Land of No Reviews! I got these in the post and I’m pretty sure it was from one of y’all. I said that I love anything from a British Bake Off alum. I realized when I got these that I usually expect that to mean cookbooks so these are a wonderful subversion of that unexamined expectation.   Thank you kind benefactor, I will enjoy them in the best health possible!

Say My Name by Aviva Blakeman

Y’all!!!! Firstly – I’m here! It’s been a very intense couple of years for me. This is my first review in a while and I declare complete review bankruptcy on anything I read during that time. No obligations, no guilt, no shame. (This review fills in the “And So It Begins” CBR11 Bingo Square) Secondly – y’all. Y’all? Y’all.  Sometimes a friend or acquaintance writes a book and I read it and it’s… well it’s bad! Sometimes it’s mediocre, sometimes it’s serviceable but not great, […]
