Our final #CannonBookClub of 2018 is on November 2 and 3 is Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson as the second of our Anniversary Reads. This book has inspired a wide range of emotions and responses – everything from 1 star reviews to 5 star reviews and we are excited to see how all of your opinions come together in our big Discussion Post. It’s time to get thinking about what we’re going to talk about, and this book travels across time […]
I feel let-down (thank godtopus this isn’t my Cannonball book) BINGO #2
I had such hopes for this one. I have a noted love of Craig Ferguson. I read and enjoyed his autobiography American On Purpose during my first Cannonball Read. Ferguson in this debut is a version of creepy but lovable, which is a combination that worked very well for me in his stint as host of The Late Late Show and works less well in this book. I’m still struggling to wrap my head around what I read and what the heck he was after, […]
Audrey is Great. This Book? Not So Much. (CBR10Bingo)
When we were voting for the AlabamaPink book club this book was my second choice (even though I don’t vote my first choice was Between the Bridge and the River and I’ll be talking about my feelings on that one in my next review) so choosing this for the Alabama Pink bingo square made perfect sense to me. I like biographies, Audrey Hepburn, and classic Hollywood – done and done. I am however left underwhelmed by the reading experience of this book. I think it […]
A Visit to My Childhood (BINGO!)
I couldn’t let September close without achieving my first bingo. It was bothering me that I was sitting with 14 squares done and no bingos, and that given my available library books it was two more squares at least until I accomplished this. And then I remembered that I had my Throwback Thursday choice sitting on my bookshelf and it was time to take a trip back to my childhood reading. I have no recollection of how All-of-a-Kind Family arrived on my shelves. There’s no […]
Our Histories Build Us (CBR10Bingo)
Confession: I took this book out of the library no less than twice before I managed to read it. I was intimidated by the book, both by its content and its acclaim. It has a near perfect five star rating on Cannonball Read and high rating on Goodreads where literary fiction doesn’t normally do so well. I shouldn’t have been hesitant – the book earns its high rating by being one of the most accessible works of literary and historical fiction I have possibly ever […]
“When am I giving up? I’m not. I did not give up on myself then. I am not giving up on you now.” (CBR10Bingo)
I love a fun, feminist, anachronistic romance novel and that is something that Tessa Dare delivers regularly. Dare writes what I fondly refer to as Historical Fantasy Romance. There is *some* historically accurate details running through her narrative but they are very thin and often bent to suit her plot needs. In the second outing in the Girl Meets Duke series we’re following Alex Mountbatten, introduced in The Duchess Deal, who makes her living by setting clocks to Greenwich Mean Time. Following a terrible, and […]
