About fablespeak

CBR12 participant

I am a medical professional and I also HATE cancer. I LOVE to read. My bookshelf is overflowing as I frequently buy books and add them to the shelf to read later. I live in Illinois with my husband and my three dogs.

Bag of Bones

Bag of Bones by Stephen King

November 28, 2020 by fablespeak Leave a Comment

Typical Stephen King – slow burner, horror doesn’t really hit until middle to end of book and opens with a tragedy. Mike Noonan is a famous novelist who’s wife dies secondary to a brain aneurysm while leaving the pharmacy with a pregnancy test – yes, she was pregnant. Mike eventually decides to travel to him and his late wife’s summer home – a placed called Sara Laughs. Almost immediately, Mike is having some pretty odd dreams. There’s also some paranormal stuff going on inside his […]

Dark Halls

Dark Halls by Jeff Menapace

November 28, 2020 by fablespeak Leave a Comment

Looking for a quick, freaky and fun read? Check out “Dark Halls” by Jeff Menapace. I finished this book in about 4 days – both because I couldn’t put it down and because it was a quick read. Ryan Herb is a teacher still living with his mother. He accepts a job at Pinewood Elementary despite a very odd interview in which he is told about a horrid and sadistic history about the school he is soon to be employed at (previously known as Highland […]

Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance

Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang

November 28, 2020 by fablespeak Leave a Comment

If you in the mood for a light-hearted (mostly) and whimsical fantasy novel, “Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance” is worth checking out. It’s got a slightly slow pace to it, growing and expanding with each chapter. It’s got a wonderful love story in it as well. Weylen and Mary meet under no special circumstances. Weylen is maybe not human or maybe he is a man with extraordinary gifts. He can control the weather to some degree. He communes with wolves – in fact, he saves Mary […]

Who wants to buy a baby?

The Farm by Joanne Ramos

November 28, 2020 by fablespeak Leave a Comment

The Farm is definitely a slow burner with some nice science fiction/dystopian society flavors. It’s the story of a corporation banking off of designer babies. “The Farm” locates disenfranchised women, impregnates them, and sells their babies to the rich and wealthy. The women receive compensation for their babies but the concept is still horrifying. The Farm is a facility built to keep these women extremely healthy – anything they need, they get – they also don’t get everything they want. No Snickers bars available in […]

Misery is Brutal

Misery by Stephen King

November 28, 2020 by fablespeak 3 Comments

Let me start by saying, Stephen King isn’t for everyone. I think even he knows this. For me and my brother, he’s a legend. I remember being little and seeing an old copy of Desperation on my dad’s nightstand. I have since read it a couple of times. I honestly was never drawn to Misery because the story itself was honestly a bit boring to me. I had seen the movie with Kathy Bates and James Caan. I never found it that frightening – then, […]
