It is a truth universally acknowledged that writing a review for a book you love is infinitely harder than writing one for a book you hate. I really, really liked this book. It’s one of those where after I put it down I was like “yeah, it was really good,” and then the more I think about it, the more I realize it was REALLY good. I find it so easy to rant on about things an author screws up, but it is sometimes really […]
Terrible title, pretty decent book
I got Ghost Gifts through the Kindle First program as my February book. I was skeptical about how good this one would be, but this month’s picks were pretty underwhelming and this had really good ratings, so I gave it a go. The book follows Aubrey Ellis, a newspaper journalist for small town Surrey, Massachusetts. Aubrey was raised by her grandmother, Charley, who also happened to own a carnival. Oh also? Occasionally Aubrey sees and talks to dead people. She is able to communicate with spirits who have […]
A good dose of the warm and fuzzies
Lincoln has moved back home with his mother after 10 years of drifting through college programs. He takes a job at a newspaper, The Courier, working in IT. He’s there to help minimized the impact of Y2K on the company’s server, but mostly he’s there to enforce the company’s rules about internet and work email usage; he’s to monitor any emails that violate the company’s policy and send warnings to any offenders. This is how Lincoln “meets” Beth and Jennifer, a reporter who now does the […]
J.K. Rowling is a goddess

I haven’t researched the reason for the pen name, but given the content of this book (and the first one in the series, the excellent The Cuckoo’s Calling), which is much more mature and graphic, it’s not hard to imagine that she’d like to keep this image separate from her Harry Potter books. So, getting into it: Cormoran Strike is a private investigator in London. […]
If the Ghostbusters worked for the FBI
Harmony Black is a by-the-book FBI agent. She’s also a witch. For years she has worked special cases – ones that involve things that normal people would never accept nor believe. Finally she has gotten a break and taken a much needed vacation, only to get called back in for an emergency case. This time, Harmony is to work with a group of other special agents (known as the Circus) to take down the Bogeyman, a being that abducts children and one Harmony knows all […]
Georgie’s marriage is in trouble. She and her husband, Neal, end up in different cities for Christmas – she makes a last-minute decision to stay in L.A. to work on an important new project for her work, while Neal takes their two daughters to Omaha for Christmas as originally planned. This is the first time in 15 years the two have been apart for any length of time, and Georgie and Neal left each other on very tense terms. Georgie, a television writer, leads a […]
