Eva Seabirdsong's Reviews:

Lust on the High Seas

March 4, 2015 by Eva Seabirdsong Leave a Comment

Honor Bound by Brenda Novak is guilty of two of my biggest pet peeves: an ending that wraps up a little too neat and tidy, and a human character who is supposed to have violet eyes. The tidy ending is easy to ignore since I’m finished with the book anyway, but the violet eye thing really pulled me out of the fantasy. Because, really, that is not a thing. It’s just not. Besides those minor points though, this bodice-ripper was a pretty good time. It […]

Totally hit my outer space spot

February 20, 2015 by Eva Seabirdsong 1 Comment

I am struggling to write this review because The Explorers, by James Smythe, is one of those books that is definitely greatly enhanced by going into it blind. All I knew of it when I started it was that it was a suspense book set on a spaceship. It took a while for the suspense aspect to really emerge, and even then it was not at all what I typically picture when I hear the word “suspense”, but boy was this book a great ride. […]

A book I feared more than necessary

February 15, 2015 by Eva Seabirdsong 5 Comments

I started this book a while ago. Then I got pregnant and I put it down. It’s been almost a year since having my first son and I only just felt emotionally safe enough to read it. I think probably most adults faced with the imminent prospect of children think, however fleetingly, about what to do if their child is just…. bad. I didn’t want those thoughts in my head as I grew and got to know my baby son, so I waited to pick […]

Isolated together on a chilly Alaskan island

February 15, 2015 by Eva Seabirdsong Leave a Comment

Two impulsive lovers, each harboring deep seated issues and old wounds, decide to take on the task of living at an isolated Alaskan lighthouse for a year. But Kyle and Anna’s attempts at hiding from their pasts only ends up bringing them closer to what haunts them than ever. This book was an easy and engaging read, with lots of lush, vivid descriptors of the wild Alaskan landscape even as the two characters really do didn’t do a whole much. And I didn’t particularly like either Kyle […]

I never, ever, ever, ever, want to climb a big mountain.

February 2, 2015 by Eva Seabirdsong 2 Comments

This book was fantastic. I love Jon Krakauer’s clean and sophisticated writing style. I could stop there, but this would be a pretty boring review. It is, however, pretty much all you need to know. The events upon which this book was based are probably already well known to anyone who might be interested in this topic. In spring of 1996 a bunch of people tried to reach the summit of Everest, and a bunch of people died. The author was in that party of […]

Glad I Stuck it Out

January 23, 2015 by Eva Seabirdsong Leave a Comment

I almost didn’t make it past the first third of this book. I put it down for several days, with no intention of picking it back up. Three of the four men that this book is about are very unlikable; they are arrogant, brash and had zero respect for the jungle or its inhabitants. They mistreat every animal they come across, kill things that they didn’t need to and it was the scenes of animal cruelty that caused me to skip over pages entirely, and […]
