Eager to get back on the horse this year! In my walking around life, I miss my old, blind pug (the Ancient Mariner), help amazing college students become teachers, and tie an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. The Mammoth Book of Perfect Crimes and Impossible Mysteries by Mike Ashley

January 19, 2022 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

The Mammoth Book of Perfect Crimes and Impossible Mysteries, edited by Mike Ashley, is fun on a bun. I always buy these “Mammoth Book of….” books and never read them. I love mystery anthologies, so a yooge one should be right up my alley. Instead I whine about it being too big I can’t do it *sob*. But I am starting out this Cannonball having completed two mammoth books o’crime, and dang it, I’m proud of myself. The best thing about this book is how […]

8 Ball Chicks: A Year in the Violent World of Girl Gangs by Gini Sikes

January 17, 2022 by esmemoria 2 Comments

Journalist Gini Sikes’ 8 Ball Chicks: A Year in the Violent World of Girl Gangs is a brilliant, heart wrenching account of girl gang-bangers in LA, San Antonio and Milwaukee. Sikes captures the violence, the struggles, and the strength of the children and young women who get involved in gangs. Much attention has been paid to male gang members, but girl gangs have their own stories. While many start out as adjuncts to a male gang, they are their own community—the potential to be equally […]

Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie

January 9, 2022 by esmemoria 2 Comments

Sad to say, Agatha Christie’s Dumb Witness is the worst Christie I’ve read. On the plus side, even a bad Christie is still nice and escapist. But Dumb Witness is boring and too long for the premise—it would have been much better as a short story. Emily Arundell is an older, wealthy lady who is as feisty as she is frugal. One night she falls down the stairs, and not long after dies of liver failure. She leaves all her money to her hapless companion, […]

Three Act Tragedy by Agatha Christie

Lord Edgware Dies by Agatha Christie

January 3, 2022 by esmemoria 2 Comments

My mother traveled to Europe when she was young and brought back a pile of Agatha Christies from England. I remember reading those fragile books, their pages browned, their spines crackling apart. I fell in love with Christie and re-read the books many times. As an adult, I find Christie mysteries incredibly comforting. I’ve had a full two weeks off for the holidays and it’s been glorious. I had some challenging books to read, but decided to read a slew of Agatha Christies instead. I […]

I’d Rather Juggle Chainsaws

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

December 29, 2021 by esmemoria 2 Comments

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix is an unsatisfying book with a surprisingly decent ending. I picked it up as Good Reads listed it as readers’ favorite horror novel of 2021. I don’t read a ton of horror, though I am a Stephen King devotee. But this book did not work for me. The Final Girl is a trope that refers to a final girl survivor who squares off with the killer at the end of a horror film. Think Jamie Lee Curtis […]

A Pleasant Way to Spend the Holidays

The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries by Ed. Otto Penzler

December 27, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

I always find it a bit hard to review mystery anthologies. The stories are quick, plot-driven snacks that don’t have any particular depth to them. Which is precisely the reason I like them—they are a nice distraction from reading that requires more heavy lifting. The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries, edited by the ubiquitous Otto Penzler, was a fun book to read for the holidays. The majority are not cozy mysteries, which was what I was expecting and was a tad disappointed not to find. […]
