Eager to get back on the horse this year! In my walking around life, I miss my old, blind pug (the Ancient Mariner), help amazing college students become teachers, and tie an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. The Gastronomical Me by MFK Fisher

October 25, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Bingo: “G” And with this I black out my Bingo card!! MFK Fisher’s The Gastronomical Me is a feast. Fisher transmits her memories through the lens of food, in which she takes the most sensual pleasure. Raised by a grandmother who saw food as strictly utilitarian, Fisher remembers her saying, “‘Eat what’s set before you, and be thankful for it,’ Grandmother said often; or in other words, “Take what God has created and eat it humbly and without sinful pleasure.” Fisher, fiercely independent and fascinated […]

Mob Justice in a Western Town

The Ox Bow Incident by Walter Van Tilburg Clark

October 18, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Bingo: “O” The true law is something in itself; it is the spirit of the moral nature of man; it is an existence apart, like God, and as worthy of worship as God. If we can touch God at all, where do we touch him save in the conscience? And what is the conscience of any man save his little fragment of the conscience of all men in all time?” Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s The Ox Bow incident is an observation on justice, mob psychology, […]

Bingo: “I” Seventeen year old Avery is on the ropes. Her mother has died, her father is nowhere around, and she’s living with her beloved sister until her sister’s abusive boyfriend moves in. Refusing to live with him, Avery moves into her car. What she doesn’t know is her life is about to change drastically. Jennifer Lynn Barnes’s The Inheritance Games is a YA novel. Her heroine Avery is visited by a member of the fabulously wealthy Hawthorne family, and told she must be present […]

Riveting and Original Thriller

Underground Airlines by Ben Winters

October 13, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Bingo: Green Every day is two worlds; every day we split into two.” I often can’t remember when or why I picked up a book for my TBR. I’ve had Ben Winters’s Underground Airlines for quite a while, but I don’t know what led me to the book. A review? Browsing in the bookstore? However I came across it, I don’t think I realized how good it would be. It is the 21st century and four states–the Hard Four–still allow slavery. This came about through […]

Evil Geniuses Come in All Ages

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

October 9, 2025 by esmemoria 2 Comments

Bingo: Culture. This book covers many aspects of fairy culture. I haven’t read any fantasy in a long time, so I picked up the YA novel Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. It was a light read, but I enjoyed it. Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old boy who comes from a long line of crime lords. He is extraordinarily smart and devious. At the start of the book, he manages to get his hands on the fairies’ golden book, which holds all their secrets. […]

“ We locked eyes, not needing to speak to each other. We understood that survival was everything. It was the meaning of life.”

The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson

October 6, 2025 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

Almost three years ago I reviewed Peter Swanson’s Eight Perfect Murders, a book I thoroughly enjoyed. For some unknown reason, right after I finished the book  I went on Good Reads and spoiled a number of his other books for myself, including The Kind Worth Killing. Thankfully I completely forgot the plot, so I picked this up for a fast read. My reviews of mystery thrillers are often not terribly long because I don’t want to spoil anything. This is particularly true for this book […]
