The Rise of Sanctuary Noodles

Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz

July 15, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

There are many reasons that Annalee Newitz’ Automatic Noodle felt like it was written for me specifically. It has cooking, which is one of my great loves and is a way I show love and feel worth when I am anxious. It has characters trying to live and be in control of their lives in a country with laws that don’t grant them full autonomy. Every one of these characters, whether we get their backstory or not, is a weirdo with enormous trauma just doing […]

The World Tries to Make Us Commodities, but We are Human.

Plum by Cate C. Wells

When we first meet Jo-Beth Connoly, aka Plum, she’s at work. Adam Wade is watching her give his step brother and business partner a blow job in a private room at The White Van, a strip club run by the Steel Bones Motorcycle Club. Adam’s brother tries to short Plum on money and a fight ensues. Adam gives Plum more money than she’s owed to settle the issue. Plum is concerned Adam may think they have some sort of pay in advance thing going. Adam […]

The cover of Debts of Fire by Intisar Khanani

There is a great difference between fearing death, which you don’t seem to, and not wanting to die.

Debts of Fire by Intisar Khanani

July 8, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I highly recommend the Sunbolt Chronicles series. Intisar Khanani writes complex and engaging stories with resourceful girls at the center. At the start of the series, a fortune teller tells Hitomi to run, and so she has been ever since. In Debts of Fire, Hitomi is still running, but is starting to think about how to live her life beyond that, if she survives. Hitomi does dangerous things because they need to be done. Things are more fraught after Memories of Ash – her magic […]

She died for the third time in a week and a half

The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam by Megan Bannen

June 27, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Tanrian Marshal Rosie Fox dies in chapter one of The Undercutting of Rosie and Adam, but that’s not her biggest problem. Her biggest problem is that she comes back to life. She’s immortal and she doesn’t like it. Rosie’s death happened when she tried to touch something inside a malfunctioning portal device. The portal device also died in the incident, requiring Dr. Adam Lee to visit Tanria to fix the portal. Marshal Fox and Dr. Lee met five years earlier, and she bound his wounded […]

Para siempre. Para sempre.

When Javi Dumped Mari by Mia Sosa

June 24, 2025 by Emmalita 1 Comment

It took me a ridiculously long time to realize that When Javi Dumped Mari is a riff on When Harry Met Sally. To be fair, to me, the only part of the movie that really stuck with me were the scenes with Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby. I really enjoyed When Javi Dumped Mari. I’ve liked all the Mia Sosa books I’ve read, but I loved this one. It is funny and heartfelt. I loved the ups and downs of the friendship between Mari and Javi, and between Mari […]
