The State of Texas hasn’t been very friendly to trans folks for a long time, but right now the current Governor and the most recent Legislature are actively hostile. They are targeting trans kids and their families, threatening to charge adults who support their non-binary and trans kids with child abuse. But this review isn’t about those goons. This review is about the four people who make up HEAs for Trans Kids and the authors who donated their books to raise money to support trans […]

All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson

September 17, 2022 by Emmalita 6 Comments

I am pulling from a few recent books to construct this thought about All Boys Aren’t Blue and why this book is necessary. Empathy is a necessary component of understanding that other people have value. Empathy requires imagination and imagination needs at least a few points of reference. George M. Johnson’s memoir manifesto is their story of being black and queer in America. Their story is not intended to be the story, but a story that opens the doors for readers to find their own […]

CBR14 Bingo – Week 9 Check-in

September 15, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Welcome to the Week 9 CBR 14 Bingo Check-in! You can see the card and the rules on the kick-off post. This week’s mood: We’re With the Banned. While getting ready for #CannonBookClub’s discussions of All Boys Aren’t Blue, The 1619 Project, and The Hate U Give, I was again reminded that while the state I live in is doing the most to be the worst, books and libraries are being challenged all over. So, I thought I’d offer some resources for fighting book banning. […]

Rambutan: Recipes from Sri Lanka by Cynthia Shanmugalingam

September 12, 2022 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Two things, if you like coconut milk and have access to fresh curry leaves (likely at a local Indian grocer), you need this cookbook; secondly, even if you do not like coconut milk and can’t get curry leaves to save your life, you probably still need this cookbook. Go ahead and get it because even if you only read it it’s still worth the money. Cynthia Shanmugalingam’s Rambutan is gorgeous. The photography is luscious. The writing is warm, funny, heartbreaking, and evocative. I can smell […]

CBR14 Bingo – Week 8 Check-in

September 8, 2022 by Emmalita 10 Comments

Welcome to the Week 8 CBR 14 Bingo Check-in! You can see the card and the rules on the kick-off post. This week’s mood: Peaches! Plums! Cherries! Any kind of stone fruit really. This is the point at which every year I realize stone fruit season is almost over and I haven’t made a single cobbler, pie, or cake. And then I go overboard and further realize that no one around me wants to eat stone fruit at every meal, not even in a pie. […]

How to Write a Song that Matters by Dar Williams

September 5, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I love listening to or reading about how artists create. Dar Williams is a phenomenal singer/songwriter. I’ve seen her live in small venues on a couple of occasions and she’s a lovely presence. In May 2020 she released “Something to Get Through” and the video includes signs from therapists. It’s a great song to breath to when panic starts to overwhelm. How to Write a Song That Matters puts on the page Williams songwriting retreat. I’m sure that the retreat is more rewarding in person, […]
