Needed more mystery solving and way less age gap romance

Rhapsodic by Laura Thelassa

December 9, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The part of this book that I really liked was the supernatural PI being called into solve a mystery in the Fae Kingdom of Night. The part that I struggled with, a lot, was the King of Night, The Bargainer, falling in love with a traumatized teenage girl. Calypso “Callie” Lillis is a siren. She can compel humans to tell her things and to do things against their will. Very convenient for a private investigator. She’s in business with her longtime best friend, whom we […]

Three more reasons you should be reading Katrina Jackson

Sabbatical by Katrina Jackson

Layover by Katrina Jackson

Back in the Day by Katrina Jackson

December 9, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I’m always frustrated with my own inadequacies when I try to describe why you should be reading Katrina Jackson’s books. Good authors have a voice and that voice brings the reader into their story and characters in a way that is unique to them. Jackson’s voice put me into her characters and worlds in a way that is very her and so satisfying. One of Jackson’s primary concerns is the interior life of her main characters, usually the woman at the center of the story. […]

It was like a form of meditation and therapy. Squeezing the limes and cleaning the shrimp – that is the memory of food.

Recipe for Disaster: 40 Superstar Stories of Sustenance and Survival by Alison Riley

December 6, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Recipe for Disaster starts so well. The first recipe is Samantha Irby’s Rejection Chicken. First things first, you gotta get dumped.” The whole recipe is the story of heartbreak, self soothing, and chopping and cooking. I like to slice them on a severe angle because it looks cool and chef-y, but honestly? It doesn’t matter! Does anything?????? Same, Samantha Irby, same. I don’t just eat my feelings, I cook my feelings too. Sometimes I need to fiercely chop a lot of things, and sometimes I […]

Finally visiting the World of the 5 Gods

Penric’s Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold

Penric and the Shaman by Lois McMaster Bujold

Penric’s Fox by Lois McMaster Bujold

December 6, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Bothari43 has been singing the praises of Lois McMaster Bujold for some time and she, and a couple of other people, have given me various Bujold books, which I have not read. I don’t know why. I believe Bothari43 when she tells me I will like the books, but some part of me, I don’t know, hates joy? I become overwhelmed with anxiety that I will fail people by not loving the books as much as they do? Anyway, I finally bit the bullet, sort […]

Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort

“Only once,” he warned. “Only once,” she lied.

Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort

December 2, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

It’s reasonable to expect that a gender swapped contemporary Phantom of the Opera is going to be bonkers. The genius of Jen Comfort is that her bonkers romance is both almost excessively over the top and extremely well thought out. I loved Comfort’s first book, The Astronaut and the Star, though it is not without it’s faults. Midnight Duet is an even better book and I love it even more. The story is tighter without sacrificing the roller coaster about to fly off the rails […]

Thank you livresquejess!

December 1, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Livresquejess made my night with an email gifting me with three ebooks. I know, I am so basic, I really only read on my tablet these days. I am so excited, just look at these beauties: I have been drooling over The Ballad of Perilous Graves by Alex Jennings since some time late last year when I saw a blurb about it on Twitter (RIP BookTwitter). Last year I saw a review of Half a Soul from KJ Charles and have been wanting it since, […]
