Emmalita's Reviews:

I would have written myself into his skin if only I could, like a prisoner marking the walls of his cell, just to prove I was still alive and that I did not drift, untouching and untouched, through a universe of empty spaces and fading stars.

Glitterland by Alexis Hall

December 26, 2022 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Nobody puts me into someone else’s head quite the way Alexis Hall does. Sometimes that’s a problem for me, like when I had to bail on Rosalind Palmer because the narcissist relationship was too visceral for me. In Glitterland, being in Ash’s head meant I was still having that visceral experience and I could see the lights of the oncoming disaster train, but I also could see how he was going to move through and repair the damage he does. It engaged my compassion without […]

Pure comfort

Alpha by Audrey Faye

Heart by Audrey Faye

Rebel by Audrey Faye

December 21, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Several people in my not Cannonball Read book community recommended Audrey Faye’s Ghost Mountain Wolf Shifter Series. I grabbed the first one from Kindle Unlimited and, as I do, opened it to read the first couple of pages. And then I kept going and read until 5 am. I immediately downloaded the rest of the series. Which may have been a mistake, but seriously, this series is a soft therapy session and pure comfort. While I was reading the series, there were a number of […]

CBR Diversions: Wrap it Up

December 21, 2022 by Emmalita 48 Comments

Cannonball Read 14 comes to an end at Noon (eastern) on Saturday, December 31. With 10-ish days to go, now seems like a good time to wrap up your thoughts on how CBR14 went for you. 2022 was a bit tumultuous for me. There were some big changes and it was the constant presence of Cannonball Read and Cannonballers that kept me steady. I read some really great books this year. I wrote a couple of reviews I’m very proud of. Your reviews are always […]

A Science Fiction-ish Fantasy with Dragons to Start Your New Year

The Keeper's Six by Kate Elliott

December 19, 2022 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I enjoyed The Keeper’s Six so much. I’ve been wanting to dive into Kate Elliott, and The Keeper’s Six, a stand-alone short novel seemed perfect. First of all, the protagonist in this book is a woman older than I am. It is very rare to see a 60-year old woman as a kick ass protagonist when she isn’t also immortal. Esther is a grandmother. Secondly, this book has dragons. A dragon is the antagonist. Thirdly, this book is quite Jewish, which is refreshing. I’m hoping […]

A very long book for an ending I did not expect.

Icebreaker by Hannah Grace

December 12, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This was a really strange read. It felt like reading fanfic, but not the good fanfic, the fanfic that people think you get when you read fanfic – really long and pointlessly indulgent. This was going to be a 3 star read, because even though it needed a lot of editing, and 150 fewer pages, it wasn’t horrible. And then I got to the end and was so confused as to what the point had been and why so many plot lines were left loose. […]

The five purposes of prayer were taught to be service, supplication, gratitude, divination, and atonement, and it was gratitude Penric chose now.

Knot of Shadows by Lois McMaster Bujold

December 12, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I’ve enjoyed the Penric and Desdemona series enormously over the past 3 weeks. I will circle back around and review the installments I have not yet reviewed in the new year. I raced through the last 6 and they certainly deserve a reread. I think my favorite thing about the series is that it is in many ways an investigative procedural – Pen and Des investigate things and get in and out of situations without there being an over-arching antagonist or a need to save […]
