Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

May 14, 2023 by Emmalita 6 Comments

I know what you’re thinking. Thief. Plagiarizer. And perhaps, because all bad things must be racially motivated, Racist. Hear me out. It’s not so awful as it sounds. Readers, it is exactly as bad as it sounds. Juniper Song Hayward is bad person, but don’t worry, she has forgiven herself. Yellowface is told to the reader by June. We are her confessor. She tells us all of her resentments, fears, manipulations, and triumphs. Most of all, she tells us her rationalizations. Athena Liu and June […]

Deep down, we’re all weird

Goblin Mode by McKayla Coyle

May 8, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

McKayla Coyle’s Goblin Mode, is a bit of an odd choice for me to review, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Personally, I don’t really have a well formed aesthetic. I like what I like and none of it really matches or fits a philosophy or lifestyle. However, I appreciate goblincore’s rejection of Capitalism and conformity. I’m not so much into the nature aspects of goblincore (I have allergies), but I appreciate the weirdness, the clutter, the comfort, and the not fitting in to a mainstream […]

“He’s a grief-stricken madman.” “He’s just like us.”

Witch King by Martha Wells

May 8, 2023 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Martha Wells knows how to grab a reader by the throat right at the beginning. We meet Kai, the Witch King, in a moment of confusion. His body has been murdered and he has awakened in a tomb designed to keep him trapped. One friend is trapped with him, but not others. Who betrayed him, and where are the other members of his family? Kai is a demon prince, invited to inhabit the body of a dying human girl. The life above ground that he expects […]

“We might be useful, but we shall most certainly be improper.“

The Late Mrs. Willoughby by Claudia Gray

May 5, 2023 by Emmalita 8 Comments

I am enjoying Claudia Gray’s Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney mystery series so much. This second outing in the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney mysteries feels heavier than the first. In The Murder of Mr. Wickham, the victim was one of Jane Austen’s least sympathetic characters. I certainly don’t advocate for murdering people, but Mr. Wickham’s violent demise did not cause distress. In The Late Mrs. Willoughby, we get no such comfort. Mrs. Willoughby may not be the nicest or most charming person, but she is […]

Unimaginative but fine

Smashed by Adam Walton, Brett Walton

May 3, 2023 by Emmalita 5 Comments

I had never heard of Adam and Brett Walton before I downloaded Smashed: 60 Epic Smash Burgers and Sandwiches for Dinner, for Lunch, and Even for Breakfast – for Your Outdoor Griddle, Grill, or Skillet. They have an outdoor grilling YouTube channel called the Waltwins. I’ve watched a few of their most popular videos and they are fine. They are fine and so is their cookbook. The bulk of the cookbook is beef burgers and I’m going to tell you a secret – anything you […]

“It’s not fair that evil bosses are just oppressive losers in real life.”

Second Chance with the Demon by Chace Verity

May 1, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

When your terrible boss tells you he would never screw you over and that you are the most important employee, things are about to get really bad at work. The more of Chace Verity’s books I read, the more I love them. Their characters are soft, accepting, respectful, funny, and extremely horny. hen they get to the point where they are having sex, there is so much joy. Chrystal loves writing video games even though the small company she works for is rife with toxic […]
