Veg-table by Nik Sharma

June 27, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Nik Sharma is an auto-buy author for me. I think he is one of the most interesting people writing about food today.  Veg-table is more contained, and a little less daunting than The Flavor Bible, but it isn’t less exciting. If you are new to Nik Sharma, this is a great place to start. To clarify, Veg-table: Recipes, Techniques and Plant Science for Big-Flavored, Vegetable-Focused Meals is not a vegetarian or vegan cookbook. Some of the recipes do have meat and dairy, and some do not. Vegetables […]

Iris had wanted to be independent, but instead, she’d assembled a team.

The Only Purple House in Town by Ann Aguirre

June 26, 2023 by Emmalita 3 Comments

By chapter 2 this book I had never read before was a comfort read. I’m not even surprised by that. Ann Aguirre writes books that are fun and kind. Her books are fluffy cinnamon rolls, even when she is delving into emotionally difficult topics. The Only Purple House in Town exists in the Fix-It Witches universe. Iris Collins is a disappointment to (most of) her family of psychic vampires. When we first meet Iris, she feels like a failure because her abilities have never manifested […]

“Why didn’t you warn me you had an alien in the car?” “I did. You wouldn’t listen!”

The Road to Roswell by Connie Willis

June 26, 2023 by Emmalita 2 Comments

The Road to Roswell has been difficult for me to review because while I enjoyed it when I was reading it, I had to remind myself to pick it back up. I expected to love it, and I feel like I’m being unfair to the book when I complain that I only liked it. Connie Willis’s To Say Nothing of the Dog is one of my all time favorite books, and Roswell has some similarities. In both books, people are trying to find something and they […]

It didn’t matter how much of her back he was seeing in the moment, progress had been made.

Play to Win by Jodie Slaughter

June 16, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I love this book. It is a love letter to Southern Black communities and the people in them who keep each other afloat. Who hasn’t dreamed of what they would do if they won the lottery? Who hasn’t dreamed of being able to not worry about bills and make sure their people don’t have to worry about them either? Miri starts the book broke, digging a hole in the ground so that her elderly neighbor can bury some extra cash. She lives with her mother […]

Piecemeal by Kathryn Pauline

June 14, 2023 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I think Piecemeal is going to be a useful cookbook that will encourage adaptation and experimentation. Kathryn Pauline gives a recipe for a component and then provides three recipes in increasing degrees of complexity that utilize that component. The components range from “leafy herbs” to “turkey spinach meatballs,” to “Mulled wine pears.” The sections are Vegetables, Meats, Dressings and Sauces, and Fruits, compotes, and curds. After the table of contents, Pauline has helpfully broken the recipes down by type so that if you are looking […]

Book Cover of Never Been Kissed

I need to feel certain in who I’m kissing. I mean, a kiss isn’t just a kiss to me.

Never Been Kissed by Timothy Janovsky

June 14, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I was so excited when Never Been Kissed was selected as one of the Cannon Book Club Hot Fun in the Summertime books. I hope you, dear reader, will join our discussion on June 23&24. Timothy Janovsky has been on my list of authors I’d like to read for a while. In the large field of m/m (all male love interest) romances, he is one of a few men writing. Even rarer, he is a traditionally published author writing m/m new adult romantic comedies. To […]
