Emmalita's Reviews:

Very pretty, but not for me

Noon by Meike Peters

July 8, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The first thing I noticed as I skimmed through Mieke Peters’ Noon, was the beautiful photography. The bright beet soup on the cover with the artful arrangement of cucumber and radish slices, jammy hard boiled egg and dill leaves is visually pleasing and intriguing. I don’t necessarily want to eat beet soup (I like beets, but not really soup), and that was a clue that the recipes inside were not so much for me. I have at times cooked professionally, including a few years at two […]

It was disconcerting to feel that the world, in fact, might have some dimension he’d overlooked. That she might have something to teach him.

How to Tame a Wild Rogue by Julie Anne Long

July 8, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Julie Ann Long can be hit or miss for me, but she did write one of my all time favorite romances, What I Did for a Duke. How to Tame a Wild Rogue tapped into a lot of things I loved about What I Did for a Duke. Long takes these two characters who wouldn’t normally be in close contact and gives them reasons to question their assumptions about themselves and their place in the world. Because they are out of their usual milieu, they look at each […]

Who would I get to be if I got to create my life from a place of dreaming and not always resistance?

All the Black Girls are Activists by EbonyJanice Moore

July 3, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

First, if you haven’t already, go follow EbonyJanice Moore on Instagram and then go pre-order or buy All the Black Girls Are Activists. Secondly, I am a middle-aged white woman who is working on unlearning white supremacy, so this book was not written for me. Regardless, I got a lot out of reading this, and I think other white and non-Black people will too. Purely as a reading experience, All the Black Girls are Activists: A Fourth Wave Womanist Pursuit of Dreams as Radical Resistance is a joy. […]

I am reviewing this just so I can recommend a different book.

Pucking Around by Emily Rath

July 3, 2023 by Emmalita 2 Comments

I’ve seen Emily Rath’s Pucking Around mentioned a lot in my romance circles, so I took a look. I love a high heat romance, and Why choose? can be a fun trope. I am dnfing at 47%. It has a couple of issues that bother me, and I’ve read a version of this I liked better so I’ve lost interest in finishing it. I’m trading in Rachel, Jake, Caleb and Ilmari for a reread of Rachel, Ace, Cruz and the horny denizens of the Sector 4. […]

CBR15 Book Bingo Reading Challenge Begins

July 1, 2023 by Emmalita 16 Comments

As with last year, you interpret the categories. How easy or challenging you make your reading is up to you. Below are suggested interpretations and some suggestions are stronger than others. But it’s your time so pick books that appeal to you. Our theme this year has been travel your bookshelf. Like traveling, reading can expand our world. While a bad vacation may be a lifetime of stories, a bad book is just miserable. You don’t have to finish a book to review it. There […]
