Full Moon Over Freedom by Angelina M. Lopez

August 11, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed Angelina Lopez’ Filthy Rich series, starting with Lush Money. She captured that soap opera decadence of jet setting billionaires and royalty while keeping her stories grounded in relatable emotion and centering the books on strong Hispanic women. With her Milagro Street series, she is focused on regular everyday-ish people rather than billionaires and royalty. The smaller scale feels more emotionally powerful. Lopez has said that in writing about the Mexican-American communities of Southeastern Kansas, that she is telling the stories of her heart. […]

Younger is always dumber and wising up takes blood…and time.

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree

August 9, 2023 by Emmalita 4 Comments

I tend to think prequels are unnecessary. I don’t know that Bookshops & Bonedust is necessary from a story telling perspective. From a soul perspective, yes, it is necessary. Legends & Lattes was about coffee, baked goods and friendships. Bookshops & Bonedust is about books, baked goods, and friendships. The book was read by the author, Travis Baldree, who is also a voice actor. I enjoyed his narration so much I may get his narration of the Legends & Lattes audiobook. (Who am I kidding, […]

CBR15 Bingo-Week 5 Check-in

August 5, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Welcome to Week 5! For all the ick that can be found in book spaces on social media, there are enough fantastic people creating bookish content that I persevere. One of my favorite follows is Mari aka mynameismarines. I don’t always agree with her opinions on books, but she’s a thoughtful reviewer and has a good grasp on the larger dynamics. I’ve linked to one of her posts on the hockeytok/Seattle Kraken situation. Whose book related social media content do you enjoy? You can view […]

What were the choices? She had a bed-making intruder, she’d done it on autopilot, or the place was haunted. With bed-making ghosts.

Inheritance by Nora Roberts

August 4, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Nora Roberts starts off her new series, The Lost Bride Trilogy, with a couple of classic tropes – coming home early to find your fiancé in bed with another person, and discovering you have an unknown wealthy relative who has died and left you a manor house and the funds to care for it. These things happen to Sonya in different chapters, but neither is a spoiler. The newly single Sonya discovers her father had an unknown twin, who has left her the family home […]

A Romance About the Tragedy of Comedy and Second Chances Through Time Travel

New Adult by Timothy Janovsky

August 1, 2023 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Grief is a funny thing. In New Adult, Timothy Janovsky uses time travel and mind reading glasses, among other items, to explore growing up, messing up, grief, regret, forgiveness, accountability and doing the hard work of life. The tagline for the book is “Can we skip to the good part?” If you’re on social media you’ve probably heard the hook of AJR’s “The Good Part” as people show off their accomplishments, glow ups, etc. But in real life we can’t skip the hard work and […]

CBR15 Bingo-Week 4 Check-in

July 29, 2023 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Welcome to Week 4 I could say this every week, but I’ll try to keep it to no more than monthly, I love the way y’all interpret the categories. I learned so much about myself and the kind of adult I wanted to be when I took up knitting and crochet in my late 30s. What hobby made you realize you are an adult? You can view the kick-off post with the categories, rules and card here. The Players: BlackRaven – 25 reviews, BLACKOUT carmelpie – […]
