Creep: Accusations and Confessions by Myriam Gurba

September 11, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I became aware of Myriam Gurba on Twitter when she tweeted about her review of a forthcoming bestseller, American Dirt, being killed because it was too mean. My first thought, being intimately familiar with the liberties white women take with other people’s stuff, was that she was, at a minimum, as mean as she needed to be. (I am a white woman, born and raised in Texas, so when I say I am intimately familiar, I mean it is my heritage.) There is an essay […]

The book, "Cassiel's Servant" open to the title page. There is a handwritten note, "To Hannah and Ted, follow your hearts!", signed by Jacqueline Carey. This is next to a partially filled out book bingo card.

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

September 7, 2023 by Emmalita 5 Comments

I really enjoyed Starter Villain, and then I put it aside for a couple of weeks (*cough*months*cough*) because I had other reviews that need to be written sooner, and when I came back to write this review, I had a warm fuzzy feeling, but nothing of substance to say. That’s not the worst thing I can say about a book – that all I remember is a good feeling. So I reread Starter Villain, and that was not a chore. I enjoyed it again, though I […]

CBR15 Bingo-Week 9 Check-in

September 2, 2023 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Welcome to the Week 9 wrap-up! In sad news, singer, songwriter, and author Jimmy Buffett passed away yesterday. He once said that reading was his default activity, but I can’t find that clip, so here is Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) instead. The Players: ardaigle – 7 reviews BlackRaven – 25 reviews, BLACKOUT carmelpie – 19 reviews, 4 Bingos Carriejay – 9 reviews CoffeeShopReader – 14 reviews Debcapsfan – 3 reviews Dome’Loki – 3 […]

It would technically be fiction, but the kind of fiction that was true in all the ways that mattered.

System Collapse by Martha Wells

September 1, 2023 by Emmalita 5 Comments

SecUnit is not ok. I am also not ok. System Collapse, the seventh in the Murderbot Diaries series is stressful. Amazing, but stressful as heck. You cannot read System Collapse if you haven’t read Network Effect. The action picks up not long after Network Effect ends. ART is still repairing its worm hole drive, the Preservation crew and the University crew are working together to create a charter that will give the colonists (formerly known as the Targets) control over their planet and their future. […]

Shadow Thief by Intisar Khanani

Sunbolt by Intisar Khanani

August 29, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

A few years ago several Cannonballers were reading Intisar Khanani’s self published YA fantasy books. Khanani writes the kind of book that grabs you and doesn’t let go featuring teen girls who are chronically underestimated. Khanani is rereleasing her Sunbolt Chronicles, and I am brushing off my YA reading hat. I haven’t read YA since the pandemic started, and that’s no slight to the genre, it’s just where my head has been. Shadow Thief and Sunbolt are a great re-entry point. Hitomi is an immigrant […]
