Alexandra Petri’s US History: Important American Documents I Made Up by Alexandra Petri

September 23, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Alexandra Petri’s US History: Important American Documents I Made Up, is a gentler poking at US history, politics, and culture than I’m really in the mood for right now. Ten years ago I would probably have guffawed and chuckled a lot more. Right now it’s hard for me to enjoy this gentle and privileged roasting while the governor and legislature in my state are racing towards fascism like a toddler running towards a ball pit full of bombs. It’s hard for me to laugh at […]

CBR15 Bingo-Week 12 Check-in

September 23, 2023 by Emmalita 20 Comments

Welcome to the Week 12 wrap-up! Happy Fall Solstice! Whatever the weather is like for you, Summer is officially over. Yesterday was also Hobbit Day, the celebration of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins birthdays. I learned about Hobbit Day celebrations yesterday and I’m really excited. I love any excuse to share food with others and now I can have Hobbit Day parties in lieu of birthday parties. MsWas and I also have birthdays on September 22. I can’t speak for MsWas, but while I love celebrating, […]

A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by K.J. Charles

September 19, 2023 by Emmalita 3 Comments

I loved A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel. It is a sequel to The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, set several years later. In Secret Lives, Luke Doomsday is an adolescent, the abused and neglected nephew of Joss, whom Gareth saves. In Nobleman’s Guide, Luke is an adult, educated and working professionally as a secretary. Major Rufus d’Aumesty has unexpectedly (to the rest of the d’Aumesty family) inherited the title of Earl of Oxney. After a year of defending his inheritance from his uncle, Rufus is trying to […]

Days of Awe: Anthology by Aviva Blakeman, E.S. Wilder

September 15, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

This cover! It’s gorgeous. I laughed because a good friend of mine has frequently used the anthology’s tagline to describe Jewish holidays to me, “They tried to kill us, we survived. Let’s eat!” As gorgeous as the cover is, the stories inside are fantastic. Aviva Blakeman and E.S. Wilder have put together a fantastic anthology. From the introduction to the end of the last story, Jewish authors have written stories that center Jewish resistance. The stories range from the time of the Spanish inquisition to […]

Sometimes he felt like he was in a particularly brutal version of Groundhog Day, stuck in a wheel that would never stop spinning.

Twisted Secrets by Katee Robert

September 13, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Forever Publishing is rebranding Katee Robert’s The O’Malleys series. The O’Malleys are a Boston mafia family. In addition to new covers and new titles, Robert has reworked some things that she felt didn’t hold up. I always appreciate her, “when you know better, you do better” attitude. I am not sure what has changed in the text, because I hadn’t gotten around to reading the series before now. Twisted Secrets is the third in a six book series. I appreciate it more as a part […]
