Born to be Badger by Shelly Laurenston

November 15, 2023 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Welcome to the 5th installment in Shelly Laurenston’s Honey Badger Chronicles, Born to be Badger. It has everything and everyone you loved from the first four books including the McKilligan sisters, Max’s teammates, violence, anti social behavior, inter species conflicts, and plot so bonkers it can’t be explained. This one also has a small child and puppies. Actually, the plot isn’t so bonkers it can’t be explained, but there is a lot of action as the plot unfolds. The plot is basically – someone is tying […]

November 11, 2023 by Emmalita 8 Comments

The Holiday Book Exchange is closed! Each year Cannonball Read holds a (completely voluntary) Holiday Book Exchange, and we’re happy to continue the tradition this year. It’s a lovely part of our community here at CBR and a great way to get to know a fellow Cannonballer a little bit better. If you are able to join us in the fun of sending books we are excited for you to join our bookish end of year celebration. Whether you have posted zero reviews or more […]

I pretended we hadn’t spent the past fifteen minutes playing a game of anti-romance whack-a-mole, where both of us did our best to knock our flirting down as hard as we could with verbal mallets.

Under the Meh-Stletoe by Leonor Soliz

November 9, 2023 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I came across Leonor Soliz on Instagram during Hispanic Heritage Month when Latinex authors were boosting each other. She describes her writing as comfort books with characters who are trying to be good people with Latine and immigrant experiences and fat representation. I decided to try her most recent novella, Under the Meh-stletoe, set in the fictional town of Laguna Island. Laguna Island is on the Pacific coast (I think in Canada, as Soliz is a Chilean-Canadian author). In the 1970s and 80s, Laguna Island […]

If I had read this when I was younger, I would think about Ancient Rome every day too.

A Rome of One’s Own by Emma Southon

November 1, 2023 by Emmalita 2 Comments

After reading Pooja’s review of Emma Southon’s A Rome of One’s Own, I clicked over to NetGalley and requested an arc. It was as delightful as Pooja said and my review would have been up much sooner if my brain hadn’t decided it will only produce words when a deadline is looming. It’s out next week, and I highly recommend it if you enjoy thoughtful and dryly witty examinations of ancient history and how histories are constructed. Southon divides her book between Rome as a […]

CBR15 Bingo: The Wrap-Up

October 30, 2023 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Congratulations to everyone who played. Thank you, thank you, thank you for once again joining in the fun. Bingo has become my favorite seasons of the year. None of this could happen without a lot of help from MsWas, the Cannonball Read Braintrust, and yesknopemaybe, who creates our beautiful Bingo cards. Wrap-up: Twenty-eight of you wrote 445 reviews and I read most of them. I am consistently impressed with the thoughtfulness and humor in your reviews, even when I have no intention of reading the […]

Queer people live and love in flyover states, too.

Queerly Beloved by Susie Dumond

October 25, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The lovely ariana_reads won a Q&A with author Susie Dumond in the Romance for Maui auction. I was invited to join, so I read her debut book, Queerly Beloved, and set my alarm for early Saturday morning. I enjoyed both the book and the Q&A. It was interesting to hear Dumond talk about why she fought to keep her story set in 2014-2015, and the importance of telling queer stories set in the flyover states. As much as I enjoyed the book, it was listening […]
