Only aiming for a quarter Cannonball this year after miserably failing last year, but I've missed the CBR community and the great work done here!

Kleypas is getting demoted

March 5, 2017 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

I had super high hopes for this book, and it just didn’t live up to them.  While reading it I thought that it was the best in the series so far, but on reflection, it’s now tied with Marrying Winterborne (though it ends up with a lower grade because I am trying to be stricter with myself on grading and be slightly less generous). Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, is the heir to a dukedom and a young man-about-town who is enjoying the finer things in […]

Promising new (to me) author

March 1, 2017 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

Here’s another new to me author that I decided to try out with a prequel novella – this time with better results.  I have already read the first full length book in the series (review pending) and intend to keep going. In 1887, Ted Harper is the owner of a major bank in New York City and one of the wealthiest men in the country.  He is standing on a train platform when a young woman comes up, kisses him, and pretends to be his […]

Another strong showing

February 26, 2017 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

Lucy Parker has earned herself a spot on my preorder list with this one.  It’s not as magnetic as Act Like It, but it still was a pleasure to read.  I dropped the new Lisa Kleypas halfway through to pick this up instead, finished it, and then went back to the Kleypas.  This says SO much about both books. Lily Lamprey is a soap opera star who wants to break in to the theater world.  Through a family friend she gets the opportunity to audition […]

Implausible Drivel

February 24, 2017 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

This is a new to me author and I decided to give her a try with this prequel novella.  There were two things that made me want to pick this up (1) the title of the series is Lovestruck Librarians (how cute is that?!) and (2) it is set on New Year’s Eve.  I like to read holiday novellas each year, and I liked the idea of a NYE setting instead of Christmas.  Too bad I didn’t get around to reading it until February.  :-/ […]

Not worth the time

February 24, 2017 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

Bleh.  I just did not like this book very much.  I wanted something historical and heartfelt and I have loved everything else I have read by Carla Kelly, so I thought this would be a safe choice.  It just wasn’t very good. There is a lot of plot packed in to one little book.  James Trevenan was a sailor who survived a shipwreck and lived alone on a deserted island for five years (somewhere in the early 1800s – George III is still King, but […]

“One may be elegant or enthusiastic, but seldom both.”

February 13, 2017 by Ellepkay 3 Comments

I had somehow forgotten how much I love Deanna Raybourn’s prose.  I will not forget again.  I think I highlighted more passages in this book than I have for any other before.  I will try not to bog down this review with all of them, and to leave you some tidbits of joy to discover for yourself should you chose to read it. In 1887 Veronica Speedwell is a young woman (mid 20s) who was raised by her ‘aunts’, two women who adopted her as […]
