Only aiming for a quarter Cannonball this year after miserably failing last year, but I've missed the CBR community and the great work done here!

Ellepkay's Reviews:

I’m keeping this author – even if she isn’t bringing anything new to the table

April 30, 2016 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

Beth Ellen was very generous and let me read her library copy of this book even before she did.  THAT is a good sister.  This is my first full length book by this author.  I really enjoyed her novella that takes place concurrently with this story.  Between this book and that novella I’m adding her to my ‘must pick up from library or on sale’ list.  There are very few authors these days whose books can command full price in from me. Heath is a […]

Viagra in a romance?! I am a fan of what is going on here.

April 27, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

I give this book a mixed grade – somewhere between 3.5-4.25 stars.  I know that is vague.  I really, really appreciate what the author was going for, but I think it suffered in the execution a bit.  One of my biggest issues was that it should have been longer to really give the characters time to develop.  I almost never feel that way.  I’m usually wondering if the author was paid by the word since they are dragging things out. Theme wise, this book was […]

The Looooooong Night

April 25, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

I’m going to try to be fair to this book and author.  This is my third (fourth if you count a DNF) Connie Brockway book, and I just don’t think she’s for me.  But maybe she is for you!  Even after not particularly enjoying the others I read I picked this one up on sale because it made NPR’s Summer of Love list last year. Anne Wilder is a respectable widow by day and at night she steals from members of the ton, as a […]

Greatest Romance Heroine of All Time. Of. All. Time.

April 20, 2016 by Ellepkay 17 Comments

Ya’ll made a huge mistake when you didn’t vote for this book for our first bookclub read.  I voted for it because I already owned it and needed an excuse to finally get to reading it.  How silly I was to wait! This book was so good.  SO.  GOOD.  I have heard Georgette Heyer referred to as the author whose style is closest to Jane Austen, and if this book is representative of her work, then that is definitely true.  Every character is well defined.  […]

A Trip Back in Time

April 12, 2016 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

This book was an interesting experience.  I started reading romance novels in the mid-90s.  Then, I gave them up (except perennial rereads) for nearly 15 years.  When I came back to them I was so pleasantly surprised by what I found that 95% of my reading is now romance novels.  Both the content of the books and my sensibilities have grown up during the lapse in my reading.  I still find problematic elements, but the level of autonomy that the heroines now show is so […]

This title has it all…and the book was ok too.

April 11, 2016 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

There are some words that seem to appear a LOT in romance: Secret, Scandal, Heiress.  This time they are all in one place.  But, it this book is not as much fun as the title would imply. Some general thoughts before I get to the nitty-gritty of this book.  (1) I thought this was a novella when I picked it up.  I don’t know why, but I did.  And then, it seemed to go on for.ev.er.  This is not the book’s fault, but my own, […]
