Divorcing by Susan Taubes

May 21, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Not sure what to think about this one.  The first section covers Sophie Blind’s decision to divorce her husband despite his blithe insistence that this is not something that is going to happen.  Not that they are sharing any sort of life together.  Money is not the object, more of a possession sort of thing.  (This was written in 1969 for some sort of context, so I suppose we are in a Mad Men sort of a world here.)  Sorry Sophie, get your act together.  […]

Sexxxxy History

Royal Harlot by Susan Holloway Scott

May 14, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Barbara Villiers Palmer was a nineteen-year old newlywed when her husband, Roger Palmier and his group of fellow-conspirators sent her to Brussels with a message to the king-in-waiting, Charles Stuart, and a fortune of gold coin sewn into the hem of her dress.  Witty and reckless and a renowned beauty, she immediately caught the eye of the much older king, and it was mutual attraction immediately.  She became his mistress and held that position for a turbulent decade.   The Puritan regime of Cromwell was […]

Hold Up – Is That the French National Anthem I Just Heard?

The Montmartre Investigation by Claude Izner

April 13, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Rum doings in fin de siècle Paris.  And these affairs must be investigated, certainmente, but there is always time for a dalliance or two. Victor Legris, bookseller and part-time detective, is pondering over a single red shoe that has been brought to his attention by a Parisian goatherd, who discovered it in the street.  (Paris was a little more rural back in the day.)  It is possibly connected with the young lady dressed in red who was brutally murdered and dumped in Killer’s Crossing, Boulevard […]

So are people just getting you down? What if they just. . . weren’t there?

Dissipatio H.G. : The Vanishing by Guido Morselli

March 31, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

A very odd little book.  Written in 1997, the Italian author committed suicide not long after the book was published, in part because none of his books had sold very well.  Hmmmm. The unnamed protagonist had been contemplating suicide, and found himself in a cavern in, possibly, the Swiss Alps.  He was ready to fling himself into a bottomless lake, but, eventually, reconsidered.  However, as he left the cavern, he slowly realized that Everything. Had. Changed. Since he had been living pretty much as a […]

Bad Moon Rising

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

March 17, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

The ultimate destination wedding.  The most gorgeous and trendy couple.  And, oh right, murder. The couple is Jules Keegen, sleek and gorgeous publisher of the online magazine, The Download, and Will Slater, star of the hit live-action show, Survive the Night.  On the bride’s side, there is her half-sister, Olivia, frail mentally and physically, and estranged from her sister.  On the groom’s side, there is a squad of his posh school classmates, rowdy and feral, very much a set of Lord of Flies chaps.  And […]

The Flight Portfolio by Julie Orringer

March 6, 2021 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

In the south of Vichy France, during the early years of WWII, Varian Fry has been tasked with coordinating the escape of prominent artists on behalf of the Emergency Rescue Committee.  (Some of these refugees are fictional, but others, such as Marc Chagall and Hannah Arendt, are historic.)  Documents are an issue, but his ad hoc relief organization have many who know someone who knows someone, and several escape routes that are occasionally available.  At least for a short period.  And these refugees are holed […]
