Brevity Isn’t Everything

We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib

January 27, 2021 by dsbs42 Leave a Comment

In We Have Always Been Here, activist, writer, and photographer Samra Habib writes about her emigration from Pakistan to Canada, her relationship with Islam and the persecution her family faced as members of the Ahmadiyya sect, her arranged marriage to her first cousin, and her journey of discovery and acceptance of her queer identity. If that sounds like a lot to cover in 220 pages, that’s because it’s not covered all that much at all. I would have happily spent more time reading about it, […]

And everything is rocking out of control/When we hit Japan

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell

January 23, 2021 by dsbs42 Leave a Comment

I don’t even know where to start with this one. Historical fiction tends to be a pretty dense read, and David Mitchell tends to write pretty dense books, and my mind is swirling after finishing The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. First, let me say that this book could have really used a good Cast of Characters page or two. Broken into three main sections (followed by two more epilogue-y sections), each is full of secondary and tertiary characters who are introduced once, disappear […]

Family Friendly Cautionary Tale

Dad Is Fat by Jim Gaffigan

January 5, 2021 by dsbs42 3 Comments

I like Jim Gaffigan, and I’m not apologizing for it. I find his humour comforting and low-key, and I also eat like a toddler and enjoy it/hate myself for it, so there’s that. When Gaffigan had his Twitter outburst a few months ago, some people were surprised at his politics, and some were pissed that he didn’t speak up sooner, but he’s never really hidden his more progressive leanings. He just didn’t highlight them (like I just did on my kindle har har) or make […]

One, Two, Three, Four, Tell Me That You Love Me More

The Cousins by Karen M. McManus

January 3, 2021 by dsbs42 2 Comments

I’m pretty sure it was Dustin himself who started me on McManus’s books back when her first came out about three years ago. He reviewed it very well in a review roundup, and One of Us Is Lying was great. Despite the fact that I totally guessed the real killer almost immediately, the characters were so enjoyable, and there were enough twists and uncertainties to keep me going. It’s still my favourite of all her books, but The Cousins is another worthy addition to her […]
