Eileen: when being unlikeable is your personality

Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh

January 11, 2024 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

mood music: twilight – Bôa My first read of 2024…a disappointment. I had high hopes as it was adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie, but it was tough even at a short 197 pages on ebook. Eileen is narrated by the aforementioned woman, now in her seventies, as she recounts her last week in her hometown, a small snowy city in New England she calls X-ville. Raised by two alcoholic parents, twenty-four-year-old Eileen is a very miserable person with a love […]

Unreliable Narration Abound

None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell

December 16, 2023 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

So…I don’t 100% know how I feel about this book. Not because it’s poorly written, its mainly a personal preference of the use of unreliable narration. Lisa Jewell has crafted an excellent story here that was deeply enthralling, the only issue I had was with the ending, and it goes back to the unreliable narration. The story is set in England and follows two women, Alix Summers and Josie Fair, who meet at a pub while out celebrating their birthdays and discover that they are […]

A Mysterious Introduction to Agatha Christie

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie

December 8, 2023 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

Having never read an Agagtha Christie book before, I decided it was only appropriate to begin with her first Poirot mystery, rather than a more well known title like Murder on the Orient Express. The reader follows narrator Arthur Hastings, a soldier recently released on sick leave from the Western Front during WW2. He runs into an old friend, John Cavendish, who invites him to stay at his families sprawling estate, Styles Court. There, Hastings is reintroduced to several characters: Emily Inglethorp, John’s stepmother Mary […]

Jekyll and Hyde

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

November 27, 2023 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

Althought I had never read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I thought I had a basic understanding of the storyline about a man who through a series of events creates a split personality within himself, one good and one evil. Imagine my surprise when I actually read this book and I discovered I was very wrong about most of this story, and my understanding of what it was about was heavily influenced by the Jekyll and Hyde musical. There is no […]

Bright Young Women

Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll

November 24, 2023 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

I was hesitant to pick up the new novel from Jessica Knoll as I really didn’t care for Luckiest Girl Alive, one of her previous published works which was turned into a Netflix film starring Mila Kunis. But I was pleasantly surpised by Bright Young Women, as it was a refreshing take on the oft cliched true crime drama narrative. Rather than focusing on the perpetrator, Knoll brings attention and humanity to the victims, their friends and their families. The book follows two women across two different […]

Fetch the Bolt Cutters

Burn It Down by Maureen Ryan

October 18, 2023 by donttrustthe_bea Leave a Comment

The number of times I had to pick my jaw up off the floor while reading this…too many to count. Maureen Ryan is now one of my favorite authors. She did not hold back at all, and I loved the snark and straight up reads she dished out in Burn It Down without it ever feeling salacious or slanderous. She has clearly worked a very long time in the industry and this book was her way of exposing the BS she has seen and experienced. While most […]
