The book cover and internet tell me Michael Moreci is no stranger to writing adventures in the comic form. He has written Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, other DC Superheroes, as well as acclaimed original sci-fi comics. A life long Star Wars fan, he also writes for Lucasfilm and provides content for Starwars.com. Moreci even has a rebel alliance tattoo on his forearm. This debut novel was kick started into being by his editor contacting him and saying, “You love Star Wars. Write me a love letter to […]
Disabled, despised, and brilliant heroine makes for great reading
Curtis Craddock has created an interesting world setting. It contains a blend of 1600s court life and intrigues (complete with musketeers and powdered wigs!), steampunk, a mystical religious order, and bloodline magics. Humanity lives on giant floating land masses referred to as cratons. Air ships traverse the skies of the aerosphere between cratons. KIngdoms are ruled by specific saintborn bloodlines, direct descendants of the Risen Saints. The book has a great cover that evokes the contents within. In An Alchemy of Masques and Shadows we follow the […]
Traitors, Talents, and Spies
After finishing the disappointing Half a War I was scanning my shelves and the spine of this book, emblazoned with the flag of Great Britain, jumped out at me. At the Table of Wolves by Kay Kenyon. The cover has a WWII militaristic look, with the tagline “Traitors, Talents, Spies: Let the games begin”. It had been the speculative fiction pick of the month last year at my favorite bookstore. I knew nothing about it but the store’s recommendation was enough for me. Kay Kenyon has reimagined a post […]
Half a War – only kept me half engaged
In my review for Half the World, book two in the series, I said, “The two can’t stop worrying at each other and their eventual romance, with standard misunderstanding, is pretty predictable. Both characters have good arcs and come to happy endings, I just wasn’t as interested in their perspective of world events as I had Yarvi’s. While I am interested in the events occurring around the Shattered Sea, and how Father Yarvi and Gettland will get through the eventual war that is coming, I hope that […]
Fun space caper
Artemis is the second published novel of Andy Weir, of The Martian fame. The book is titled after the city Artemis, the only city on the Moon in the near future. With about 2,000 residents Artemis is tiny and mostly dependent on its tourism industry. People save up for trips to the Moon to be able to experience lunar gravity and see the historic site of the Apollo 11 landing. Artemis is brought to life by it’s narrator, Jasmine (Jazz) Bashara, Saudi born but raised on the Moon […]
Who is the hero, who is the villain?
In 2015 I was introduced to V.E. Schwab through her book A Darker Shade of Magic, which I devoured and then a year later was pleasantly surprised to find out it was the start of a trilogy. Each time I chatted with the booksellers at my favorite bookstore and ADSoM came up they always asked if I had read Vicious. I kept admitting that I hadn’t and they would always chime back about how good it is. This year for our family holiday book exchange I […]
