Cozy fantasy and Sci-fi are my self care reads. I love a good magic system and dragons are always welcome. I like my Sci-fi LGBTQ+ positive. YA and Romance fill a sweet spot. And I never underestimate good children's fiction! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Dome’Loki's Quick Questions interview.)

Black and white cat surrounded by three books, Artificial Condidtion, Exit Strategy, and Rogue Protocol

My anaylsis of Murderbot novellas 2-4

Artificial Condidtion: The Murderbot Diaries 2 by Martha Wells

Rogue Protocol: The Murderbot Diaries 3 by Martha Wells

Exit Strategy: The Murderbot Diaries 4 by Martha Wells

For self care, I started reading the second Murderbot novella the day after the election.  I then proceeded to blitzkrieg my way through the other two novellas and the novel.  Once I was finished I realized I couldn’t separate the books well enough to write reviews.  I was going to give myself review amnesty but instead decided to re-read at least the novellas and write a review immediately after each book. On this re-read, I’ve been thinking about the function of each book.  All Systems […]

Who wouldn’t want to be romanced in a magical tea shop in Paris?

Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop by Roselle Lim

November 17, 2020 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

One day, while scrolling through Instagram, a book post from Mysterious Galaxy caught my eye.  The title instantly grabbed me, Vanessa Yu’s Magical Paris Tea Shop.  Yes, please!  This was my second comfort read to help me through the US election and it definitely helped. Vanessa Yu is a fourth generation Chinese American young woman from an extraordinary family.  About once per generation a Yu is born with the gift of prophecy.  At the tender age of three Vanessa had her first prediction and life was forever […]

Modern romance and I’m here for it!

A Prince on Paper: Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole

November 14, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

When Cannonball Read did the book sale, this was instantly on my want list as Alyssa Cole has been praised by Cannonballers and I’ve been looking to get back into romance.  A Prince on Paper did not disappoint and has me eager to read more by Cole. While the setting is present day, that isn’t why I referred to this book as ‘modern’.  In a secondary storyline, a young character struggles with identity, not feeling as though they are one gender or the other, but […]

Magical Friendship: cbr12bingo – “Friendship”

Phoebe and Her Unicorn in The Magic Storm by Dana Simpson

October 30, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

“Phoebe and Her Unicorn” began as a web comic by Dana Simpson in 2012 and then a few years later became a syndicated comic strip in newspapers, that is still in active publication.  The first five books in the series are compilations of those comics.  Phoebe and Her Unicorn in The Magic Storm is the first standalone graphic novel. Phoebe is an average girl who befriends a unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils.  Together they tackle the mundane, school, to adventure, like when they solve mysteries as the […]

Murderbot lives up to the hype: cbr12bingo – “Fresh Start”

All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries 1 by Martha Wells

October 29, 2020 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

If memories serves, I first became aware of Murderbot through Cory Doctorow and was intrigued.  Then came all the love for Murderbot from Cannonballers.  When bingo was announced and there was a “Fresh Start” square, I knew immediately what I was going to read, All Systems Red. All Systems Red is set in a distant, space faring future, where all planetary exploration is done through the a corporate entity referred to only as ‘the company’.  Company requirements demand that Security Units (SecUnits) must be included as […]

“To save the world with music and love, obviously”: cbr12bingo – “Music”, 3rd Bingo!

The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow

October 23, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

The Sound of Stars was initially chosen as a candidate for the “Debut” bingo square (it was released February 2020) but another book was chosen.  Fortunately, it also fits the “Music” square to complete my 3rd bingo! This is a book I wish I had read in my teen years for a variety of reasons.  Accurate representation of anxiety disorder would have been helpful when trying to figure out my own mental health.   For it’s depiction of sexual identity, gender identity, and first time sexual […]
