Cozy fantasy and Sci-fi are my self care reads. I love a good magic system and dragons are always welcome. I like my Sci-fi LGBTQ+ positive. YA and Romance fill a sweet spot. And I never underestimate good children's fiction! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Dome’Loki's Quick Questions interview.)

The book "Warehouse Dreams" by Theresa Halverson standing next to a book bingo card.

The author told me it was a bit like X-Men and I agree! But would add there is a dash of Gattaca too. – CBR14 Bingo: Minds

Warehouse Dreams by Theresa Halvorsen

CBR14 Bingo: “Minds” – Many of the characters in this book are telepathic and psychokinetic. I love visiting the small press and publisher areas at conventions.  At Wonder Con this past Spring, I had a conversation with author Theresa Halvorsen and she convinced me to buy her book Warehouse Dreams.  She described it as a bit X-Men, as it has genetically superpowered people, and a bit Harry Potter because it is set in a school for powered kids.  I would add there is a dose […]

The book, "City of Stone and Silence" by Django Wexler standing next to a book bingo card.

Two sisters, two different powers, trying to reunite against all odds- CBR14 Bingo: Monster

City of Stone and Silence: The Wells of Sorcery Book Two by Django Wexler

July 26, 2022 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: “Monster” – Tori begins a slippery slope of abusing her mental powers and starts self-describing as a monster. The first book in the Wells of Sorcery trilogy, Ship of Smoke and Steel, was exclusively from Isoka’s point of view.  City of Stone and Silence switches things up by alternating between Isoka and her younger sister Tori. Having survived the voyage aboard Soliton, Isoka faces new challenges.  All aboard the ship have been forced off of it by the angel enforcers onto a mysterious island.  The […]

Take control of a mythic ghost ship or your sister dies isn’t much of a choice – CBR 14 Bingo: Star

Ship of Smoke and Steel: The Wells of Sorcery, Book One by Django Wexler

July 21, 2022 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

CBR14 Bingo: “Star” – Astronomy used to calculate where a ship on the ocean is located and where it’s sailing to is an important driver of the story. I’ve grown to quite like author Django Wexler’s work.  But somehow I missed that he released an entire YA trilogy between two adult series.  Book one, A Ship of Smoke and Steel, was picked up on the next trip to Mysterious Galaxy.  Ted got to it first and devoured it in days.  Then he was thrilled to […]

A black and white cat nestled on a grey chair. The book, "A Prince on Paper" by Alyssa Cole is propped up by resting on the cat's side.

I adore romance trilogies where a trio of lady friends find their perfect partner, one set per book. CBR14 Bingo: Bodies

A Prince on Paper: A Reluctant Royals novel by Alyssa Cole

CBR14 Bingo: Bodies – There is a pair of attractive bodies on the cover.  Nya discovers what pleasures her body. Is there a name for the sub-set of romance that has a trio of women friends finding their perfect partner across a trilogy?  I enjoy them!  Nora Roberts was my introduction and I devoured several.  Then there was a long hiatus of romance reading.  Cannonball Read inspired me to start seeking out new romances and that brought me to Alyssa Cole, and her “Reluctant Royals” series.  […]

Three books standing next to each other on a bookshelf. "A Princess in Theory" "A Duke by Default" "A Prince on Paper" all written by Alyssa Cole.

Sometimes you can’t bank a fire when it starts with such a strong spark

A Duke by Default: Reluctant Royals by Alyssa Cole

July 10, 2022 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

A Duke by Default is the second volume in Alyssa Cole’s “Reluctant Royals” series.  I read this series out of order by accidentally starting with the third book, A Prince on Paper, then reading the beginning, A Princess in Theory, and now have read the middle book!  Each book in the series follows a different couple and this is Portia Hobbs and Tavish (Tav) McKenzie’s time to shine. Portia is a New York socialite that has a history of drinking to find courage or drown […]

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (花ざかりの君たちへ “For You in Full Blossom”), in America shortened to Hana Kimi, is a manga series by writer and artist Hisaya Nakajo.  I fell head over heels for this manga when it was  starting to be released in the US in 2004,  eagerly waiting for translations to be done and the next volume released.  I haven’t read it in over a decade.  My ten year old has read it at least twice and is on a third read through. So I’m reading […]
