Cozy fantasy and Sci-fi are my self care reads. I love a good magic system and dragons are always welcome. I like my Sci-fi LGBTQ+ positive. YA and Romance fill a sweet spot. And I never underestimate good children's fiction! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Dome’Loki's Quick Questions interview.)

The Japanese manga, "Witch Hat Atelier" volume one next to a book bingo card.

Beautiful illustrations and engaging start to a magical manga: CBR14 Bingo “Rec’d”

Witch Hat Atelier, volume one by Kamome Shirahama

CBR14 Bingo: “Rec’d” – This book was recommended by Darcy, one of my favorite booksellers at Mysterious Galaxy bookstore. My favorite independent bookstore is also doing book bingo this summer.  With Witch Hat Atelier I was able to cross off a bingo square about recommendations on both my Cannonball Bingo (Rec’d) and Mysterious Galaxy’s (Staff pick) bingo cards.  Happily that was the last square I needed to complete a Mysterious Galaxy bingo and now I get a 20% discount on a book at the store! CBR14 Bingo: ‘Verse – The Doll’s House is part of the Sandman ‘verse. The Doll’s House introduces readers to the schemes of the Endless.  It contains issues nine through sixteen of ‘The Sandman’ comics wherein Dream sets out to put his kingdom, the Dreaming, back to rights.  A census by castle librarian, Lucien, shows that four major creations have escaped; Brute and Glob, the Corinthian, and Fiddler’s Green. Threaded through is the story of Rose Walker, a human pawn caught in the machinations of the Endless. Desire […]

Vampires are the new supernatural threat for superheroines, Aveda and Evie – CBR14 Bingo: Series

Hollywood Heroine: Heroine Complex #5 by Sarah Kuhn

August 11, 2022 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

CBR14Bingo “Series” –Hollywood Heroine is the fifth book in the Heroine Complex series. Hollywood Heroines finds Aveda Jupiter and Evie Tanaka heading to Los Angeles to visit the set of a pilot being filmed about their adventures.  A while back they agreed to sell the rights to their story but hadn’t paid much attention to the development until the studio, Pinnacle Pictures, reached out about the visit.  Aveda is still stressed from the ghost incident in the previous book, Haunted Heroine.  She isn’t comfortable with change […]

Satisfying conclusion to fun fantasy trilogy – CBR14 Bingo: Shadow

Siege of Rage and Ruin: Wells of Sorcery Book Three by Django Wexler

CBR14 Bingo: “Shadow” – One of the wells of sorcery is Shadow, gifting the user with the ability to switch places with their shadow and move between shadows. Siege of Rage and Ruin is the conclusion to Wexler’s “Wells of Sorcery” trilogy that started with Ship of Smoke and Steel, and was followed up by City of Stone and Silence. Isoka’s plan is simple.  Sneak ashore outside Kahnzoka’s harbor.  Hitch a ride with a merchant traveling to the city.  Get to her sister Tori and slip […]

And so the mythos of Gaiman’s Sandman begins – CBR14 Bingo: Adapt

The Sandman, volume 1: Preludes and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman, Mike Dringenberg (illustrator), Sam Keith (illustrator), Malcolm Jones III (illustrator), Robbie Busch (colorer), Todd Klein (letterer)

CBR14 Bingo: “Adapt” – The Sandman has recently been adapted into a television series. I discovered The Sandman graphic novels in 2000 and instantly became a fan (with collectibles to show for it!).  I’m a sucker for beautiful book editions and when the “Absolute Sandman” editions were released I couldn’t resist.  What makes them ‘Absolute’?  To quote  the Amazon blurb, “The Absolute Sandman Vol. 1 collects issues #1-20 of The Sandman and features completely new coloring, approved by the author on the first 18 issues, as well […]

The bond between mother and daughter, the joy of shared food, and the devastating loss of a parent – CBR14 Bingo: Heart

Crying in H-Mart: A Memoir by Michelle Zauner

July 30, 2022 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

CBR14 Bingo: “Heart” –  In this heartbreaking memoir, Michelle Zauner shares her love for her mother and their connection through a love of food. Last year I heard on NPR an interview with Zauner, a Korean American, when she released her debut book, Crying in H-Mart: A Memoir.  I was instantly interested in small part because I too shop at H-Mart, a Korean grocery chain in the United States.  Then I became engrossed by listening to Zauner talk about her mother’s death and food.  I […]
