My husband Jason and I are wonder twin cancer survivors! Sadly, all the radiation did not make us bionic...yet. I've done two quarter Cannonballs successfully now, and this year I'm going for a half.

Alice Payne Arrives by Kate Heartfield

April 3, 2020 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

3.5 stars In which giving people the ability to time travel goes as well as you would expect. Alice Payne is a highway-person in 1788, using her girlfriend’s clockwork robot to assist in her robberies.  Meanwhile, Prudence Zuniga is in 1889, trying to stop the first in a series of events that will lead to a War across time and history. It is not going well. Every time she interferes, the events in history play out anyway. She clearly is getting more desperate, and seems […]

I’m a Bad Guy

Empress of Forever by Max Gladstone

March 31, 2020 by Debcapsfan 3 Comments

I have been trying to stay away from my favorite genre with books written by white dudes, but I found Empress of Forever on a list of books with a badass  heroine, and how could I pass that up? Vivian Liao is a rich and powerful business woman used to getting her own way, until she draws too much attention to herself from the Government and needs to disappear. Instead, she sets off a chain of events where she is sent through time and space […]

“I and only I did this to myself”

Redshirts by John Scalzi

February 13, 2020 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I guess I have been doing this review thingy for a while because I remember when Redshirts was being reviewed on the Cannonball, and I remember the reviews were mostly positive. I try not to go back and read reviews of my book until I’m done with my review, unless I just can’t think of what to say. Do you ever have a review like that? It’s frustrating. I got my copy of this review in a subscription box of sci-fi and fantasy books and […]

Not for me

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

January 30, 2020 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

Note: This review contains a discussion of violent acts against a woman, which is depicted in the book.   I saw this book, Maria Snyder’s Poison Study, on display at my local library under a section of their librarian’s favorite books. And I can see why someone would find this dear to them. The protagonist is a realistic heroine, Yelena has magical abilities, but in order to fight her way out of the terrible situation she is, she has to train. She isn’t just suddenly […]

Interlude

The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas

November 14, 2019 by Debcapsfan 2 Comments

This a review of the fourth book in the Lady Sherlock series, The Art of Theft. If you haven’t read the other books, what are you waiting for? Many people you like that review books on this site love them. I will say, this is the first one I didn’t go back and listen to immediately again to get all the things I missed before. The plot is pretty straightforward, where Mrs. Watson’s friend, the Maharani of Ajmer, is being blackmailed with information tucked away […]
