My husband Jason and I are wonder twin cancer survivors! Sadly, all the radiation did not make us bionic...yet. I've done two quarter Cannonballs successfully now, and this year I'm going for a half.

Runaways Vol 6: Come Away with Me by Rainbow Rowell

Runaways Vol 5: Cannonfodder by Rainbow Rowell

Runaways Vol 4: but you can't hide by Rainbow Rowell

CBR 15, Picture This Look at this cover, how gorgeous is she? (Aside from the fact that she appears to have no ankle or foot). That’s Gert, she’s my favorite. This is a review of the final three volumes of Rainbow Rowell’s run of Runaways. So Runaways is Marvel but mostly the characters did their own thing although some of them have been Young Avengers and Molly is a mutant. There are 100 issues of Runaways, then it got cancelled, for now. I have read […]

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

August 8, 2023 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

CBR Bingo- Strange Worlds I am glad to see a bunch of folks reading The Kaiju Preservation Society because it was great fun. Very much like his Redshirts novel where a merry band of misfits exist and wackiness ensues. It’s not completely low stakes, and it had enough tension that I almost worried a little for our misfits. These misfits are smart scientists, except for the main character, Jamie. Jamie lifts things. Jamie is pretty non descript. Most of the characters are not described in […]

Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala

July 19, 2023 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo, Edibles Arsenic and Adobo was a Cannonball book review choice, but I couldn’t get it from the library until after the discussion passed. Still, I do look a cozy mystery and I especially like a cozy mystery with recipes, I usually cook something from the recipes in the back of the book. (Full disclosure, I do not cook it, I show my husband the recipe and he makes it for me.) So I read this and enjoyed it, it was cute, and the […]

The Secret to Getting Rich

The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Merriweather Post by Allison Pataki

June 21, 2023 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

Hillwood, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s home in Washington, DC, that is now a museum and gardens, is one of the museums in DC that not very many people know about. I happen to know about it because I live nearby and it is one of my mother’s favorite places. Marjorie liked beautiful, expensive things, and Hillwood is a museum that reflects that. She was a person that had a great deal of influence over politicians and society ladies, but history has mostly forgotten her. Except as […]

The Monsters We Defy

An Immersive World

The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope

May 6, 2023 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

I love a good immersive world in fantasy and speculative fiction, where you feel like you could be in the setting. The Monsters We Defy takes place in Washington, DC in 1925, and Clara Johnson, the main character, can communicate with spirits. I listened to the audio book of this, and Shayna Small does an exceptional job with the voices and the setting and making you invested in the story. I am not surprised to see this won the Audie award for best audio book […]

An Evil Origin Story

Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

March 6, 2023 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

My cover from the edition I checked out of the library was blue. It appears to hardcover to Hench is red. I’d be interested to know why it’s different. On it is the silhouette is a person, but their shadow has a cape. None of the people in this book are nice people. including the main character, Anna. She starts out working for a temp agency for villains, and a mayor’s son is kidnapped, their some torture, and boom, she gets her leg shattered by […]
