I listen to a lot of audio books because I have a long commute that often becomes long as the Washington DC subway system is falling apart and if one thing goes wrong they tend to snowball and the next thing you know your 30 minute trip is an hour and a half. I didn’t pay attention to who was narrating Sabriel, the first book in a series by Garth Nix, so I was delighted to discover it was read by Tim Curry. He definitely adds […]
Going back in time
4.5 stars It appears to me from reading reviews and comments that Landline is a lot of people’s least favorite Rainbow Rowell book. I really liked it though. A lot of reviews commented that they did not like Neal, the main character Georgie’s husband at all. He’s surly and not great at communication and seems to hate everyone and tolerate Georgie when they first meet. Personally, I can understand that feeling. A lot of people are terrible. When Neal in the present takes their two kids […]
Plucky Heroine is Stupid
Oh boy, where to start with The Glass Magician? There’s a LOT of pining in this book. Ceony, our plucky heroine from The Paper Magician is back learning from Emery Thane, three months after she rescued his heart from the evil Lira. She’s living with him, playing perfect little housewife trying to audition for that role permanently. And learning more about magic, I guess. A series of accidents leads Ceony to believe the Excisioners that took Lira’s frozen body are now after her. She turns out […]
Plucky Heroine is Plucky
Set in Victorian times, The Paper Magician adds magic based on different materials. When Ceony Twill, our plucky heroine, graduates from magic school, she is placed in an apprenticeship with a paper magician, and is not happy about it. Emery Thane is her teacher, and he shows her some interesting things to do with paper, as well as bringing stories to life (which seems a bit of a stretch) and Ceony settles into her new life quickly. She starts cooking and cleaning for Emery, and explains […]
Re-imagined Fairy Tales Are My Catnip
This is a review of all four Lunar Chronicles books: Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter. When I saw Cinder, the first book in the Lunar Chronicles, I was turned off by the cover and description. I hadn’t yet delved into fantasy YA and so I didn’t buy the series. I had a “what the heck was I thinking” moment about a month ago and bought the book. And I inhaled it, and then bought the next book and so forth until I had rapidly inhaled […]
Reading People’s Emails
5 Stars Attachments is the second Rainbow Rowell book that I’ve read this year, and while I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as Fangirl, it hit closer to home for me because up until very recently, I used to read other people’s emails for a living too, just like Lincoln, and just like him, that’s not what the was in the job description. I worked on an email records system, but sometimes it didn’t work well, and sometimes I’d have to read emails to see […]
