My husband Jason and I are wonder twin cancer survivors! Sadly, all the radiation did not make us bionic...yet. I've done two quarter Cannonballs successfully now, and this year I'm going for a half.

Spinning Silver by Noami Novik

November 7, 2019 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

When I was in 6th grade, people in my class made Heil Hitler gestures and I told my teacher because I was very upset. Things escalated, as these things do, and soon we were all sitting in a circle sharing why we shouldn’t be like “hooray for killing Jews.” I think I cried when I explained why I was so hurt by what I saw. Since I am Jewish, I explained, people were looking as me as not a person, or a lesser person. I […]

Evvie Drake Starts Over: A Novel by Linda Holmes

September 30, 2019 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

CBR Bingo Square: Pajiba Linda Holmes is one of my favorite people I don’t actually know, but I feel like I know because see is the host of NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast. She is warm and funny, and when I found out she was writing a book (a kissing book) I knew I had to read it. https://www.pajiba.com/book_reviews/on-the-spectacular-evvie-drake-starts-over-and-the-time-nprs-linda-holmes-twitter-shamed-me.php (Dustin’s review of the same book, which he talks about the time Linda Holmes shamed him on Twitter. I am always happy I have about […]

Yay for Pajibans that write!

Lucky Town by Peter Vonder Haar

August 20, 2019 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I read this book through my Kindle Unlimited membership. Peter Vonder Haar’s Lucky Town is the first book in the Clarke and Clarke Mysteries. He is a Pajaiban, and awesome. I really liked this book a lot. I used to play spot the CIA agent in my work at the National Archives because you have to protect people’s identities while they still might be alive, so one of the side characters made me smile. I liked the main brother and sister duo of Charlie and […]

Rich people are still the worst

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi

July 13, 2019 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square- Science! The Dispatcher by John Scalzi was created as an audio book narrated by Zachary Quinto, and was a free monthly download for subscribers. I’ve only read one other Scalzi (I really should fix that) but this main character, Tony Valdez, is a similar type of main character, working in a morally gray area and not feeling that bad about it. In his world, most people cannot be murdered, they wake up in their beds, naked and with the clock starting again. […]

Not so little runaways

Runaways Vol. 1: Find Your Way Home by Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka

Runaways Vol. 2: Best Friends Forever by Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka

June 22, 2019 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

4.5 stars This post contains spoilers from the original Runaways graphic novels. When I found out that one of my favorite authors and favorite people to follow on Twitter, Rainbow Rowell was writing a continuation of the Runaways, a group of Marvel teens that find out their parents and super evil and murdering kids, I was very excited. I had only read the first 3 collected volumes, but Gert and Chase are one of my favorite couples of all time. I knew that Rainbow Rowell […]

Great! But…

Witchmark by C.L. Polk

April 29, 2019 by Debcapsfan Leave a Comment

I found this book,Witchmark, on a list of best sci-fi/fantasy books from 2018. I wanted to try a new author. The setting is an alternate Edwardian England where the elites rule with weather magic. People who can’t control the weather and are born into the elite class are seconds, forced to give their secondary magic to the weather mages. Miles Singer runs from his family and servitude to his sister and joins the war between Aeland and Laneer. Now the war has ended and […]
