Crystalclear can usually think of something clever to say, except when she can't. She has a giant stack of unread books at home but will always find an excuse to buy/acquire/borrow another one. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: crystalclear's Quick Questions interview.)

Man, I hope it’s not aliens

I grabbed this audiobook on the way to the checkout counter at my library, and I’m glad I did.  It made much more sense than the last audiobook I listened to, so it was a nice change.  Plus, it was read by Del Roy, so it was like grandpa was telling me a story!  This book has been making the rounds and has some notoriety in the children’s book world, despite being very long for a children’s book (over 400 pages!)   We first meet […]

In which there are many words, but nothing happens

April 28, 2016 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

The story takes place in a single day.  Adam Godley, a famous mathematician is dying, and his family and friends are gathered about his deathbed.  We are mostly (always?) with our (mostly) omnipotent narrator, the god Hermes.  Oh, yes, the Greek gods are real, and apparently bored, because they like to spend time fucking with mortals.  (And also fucking them, but that’s not the main point here.  Or is it?)  Being omnipotent, Hermes can jump into other people’s minds and discover and relay what they […]

“Oh, well. Marmalade has to make its own way in life, like the rest of us, she thought.”

April 10, 2016 by crystalclear 3 Comments

This is all terribly confusing. It started out confusing and never really resolved. The Alice in the title is referring to Alice in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  We basically alternate between Ada, Alice’s friend, and Lydia, Alice’s sister. Ada has slipped her governess, Miss Armstrong, and has continued unescorted to bring a jar of marmalade to her friend Alice’s family. Ada has stumbled into Wonderland and goes on a search for her friend. Wonderland is as it always was, confusing yet sometimes profound. Our Lydia […]

A mostly good story with a lovely soundtrack

March 31, 2016 by crystalclear 1 Comment

(For maximum review enjoyment, please listen to the video!) One of the benefits of listening to the audiobook for this was the presence of the music.  Incendio is the waltz that is central to the book, and in the audiobook you can hear it throughout the narration.  It was not until I was finished with the book that I saw that the author had composed Incendio!  (So to all the people who claimed that the music “detracted” from the story, you suck.  Because here, […]

“You are a scheming, fiendish woman with entirely too much time at leisure.”

After a long day, there’s nothing better than going home and absolutely devouring a romance novel in one sitting. Lucky for me, I had Tessa Dare’s Any Duchess Will Do sitting on top of my “to read” pile! This is a gem. There were a few times I had the giggles, and parts of it seemed fairly familiar… And unlike the last romance novel I read, there was a kidnapping this time! Said kidnapping occurs at the opening of the book. Griffin York, the Duke […]

The road to Hell may be paved with good intentions, but the best exit to take to get there is in New Jersey

February 18, 2016 by crystalclear 1 Comment

Unlike the previous anthology I read, this is a book with a certain thematic idea by different authors, rather than a collection of work by one author. So if you like (or don’t like) the author of one story, just move on to the next and see where it takes you. The book is separated in two parts with three sections each. Trafficking in Magic involves Distribution, Services, and Point of Sale, while Magicking in Traffic is divided into Directing Traffic, Bad Roads, and Changing […]
