Crystalclear can usually think of something clever to say, except when she can't. She has a giant stack of unread books at home but will always find an excuse to buy/acquire/borrow another one. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: crystalclear's Quick Questions interview.)

Not the best, but not the worst either

This is the first book by Ellery Adams that I experienced.  I liked it, well enough to check out some of her other series.  I have to say I enjoyed this much more than some of her other works.  There’s a light touch of magic that’s not too much, and it doesn’t take over the story.   Nora – owns Miracle Books, a bookshop in the small town of Miracle Springs, North Carolina.  She sells new books, used books, coffee, random chotskies (that she labels […]

I was not embarrassed to read these on the train

The Paper Magician, The Glass Magician, The Master Magician It is the early 1900s, that much is apparent, with the use of telegraphs transitioning into the telephone and automobiles on the roads.  Or is it apparent? There is magic here, so things may have developed at different rates. The premise is that there is magic in man-made materials, but in order to wield it you have to bond to it, so people can only use one kind of magic.  That part I get, but that […]

Parts of this made me angry

July 5, 2018 by crystalclear 3 Comments

This review is full of spoilers. Sorry.  And foul language. Also sorry.   Gracelings are people who have a special ability, and they are identified by having two different colored eyes.  Someone could have a Grace for cooking, or swimming, or dancing. Katsa learns at a very young age that she has the Grace of killing.  So her uncle, King Randa, uses her as his personal executioner, starting from when she is just 10 years old. As she gets older and more of a mind […]

The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

A gift that keeps on giving

July 5, 2018 by crystalclear 1 Comment

I’m finally getting around to reading one of the books I got in last year’s book exchange!  (And a book I am currently lending to a coworker!)  I like it, but it’s not quite what I was expecting. It kind of reminds me of Isaac Asimov’s short story “The Ugly Little Boy.” In that story, scientists have pulled a Neanderthal child from the past to study it, almost like they are studying the children in The Girl With All the Gifts.     Basically, the […]

Finally reading a book I was given for book exchange!

So, as a running theme, this was not what I thought it was going to be.  I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t quite this.   There are three kinds of people in this world.  (Hey, that’s kind of familiar…) We have normal people, full vampires, and Colds, or people who have been bitten by a vampire but have not yet turned.  In order to become a vampire, one must be infected with the vampirism by a bite and then drink human […]

The start of a very weird series

July 5, 2018 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

So I was going along, listening to the book, and it was all fine, and then all of a sudden, I came to a realization.  “Wait a minute, this is JESUS!” Yes, this all seems to boil down to a second coming of Christ (or Christ-like character.) (Or something to do with Mormons. I’m not sure.)   This is an alternate history of Frontier era of America.  From what I quickly read of the introduction before I started, I knew there would be some differences, […]
