I love the movie The Princess Diaries. And the sequel. (And they’re both on Netflix right now!) And the books that the movies were based on were not really on my radar. But then someone wrote a Buzzfeed article about the differences between the books and the movies, and CBR10 Bingo had a square about books that have been adapted into movies, so I decided to give the book a shot. And I’m sad to say, in a reversal of what usually happens, that I like […]
“The love of the Rabbit unto you.”
This is the third book in the series, the first being The (Sort of) Dark Mage. Waldo Corpselover, raised to be a Dark Mage, is on a quest. In order to prove himself, he must go on a quest to gain three monsters, defeat a knight in battle, and bring home a dragon or dragon’s egg. During the first book, he dons the white robes and decides to masquerade as a White Mage, the exact opposite of what he is supposed to be. So far […]
“All things are reflections of other things.”
This is a short story by Neil Gaiman. A dwarf comes seeking a man to act as a guide to a certain cave in the Black Mountains on the Misty Isle, a cave that is said to be full of gold for the taking. But that gold comes with a price. This is a story of travel and darkness and truth. Going the audiobook route is always a different experience than reading something, especially when the text is supplemented by illustrations, as this one […]
All good things must come to an end
This book is a kind of bittersweet, in that it’s the last one in the main series. It’s a crazy long four books (well, five if you count the spinoff**) and it truly is the end of a journey. We’ve seen these characters grow from immature teens to adults who are willing to make tough decisions, and who are tangled in things far beyond them. The four years (or more) you spend at college change who you are as a person, and we get to […]
Trying to review a series without spoilers
Murder in the Mystery Suite I think I’ve found my favorite of Ellery Adams’ series. Murder in the Mystery Suite is what I was looking for in a clever murder mystery novel. There is no magic and the romance aspect takes a backseat to the solving of the murder. It’s all more realistic than her other books, in that it theoretically could happen in an only slightly alternate universe. The way the narrator pronounces certain words can be a bit irksome, Jane Steward is […]
There’s fiction, and then there’s unbelievable
Ok, so this is my second Ellery James book. Things started out okay. Then they got weird. Well, I mean things were a bit implausible all the way through. Let me give some examples: We begin with our main character, Ella Mae, going home to Georgia after witnessing her husband’s infidelity. So far, so good. The parts that I don’t get are: she found him boinking the two (reheaded) twins from another apartment in the elevator. Like, she presses the button and the door opens […]
