Crystalclear can usually think of something clever to say, except when she can't. She has a giant stack of unread books at home but will always find an excuse to buy/acquire/borrow another one. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: crystalclear's Quick Questions interview.)

Ogre Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

January 3, 2019 by crystalclear 1 Comment

This is a prequel to Ella Enchanted.  (The book, not the movie starring  Anne Hathaway, which is very different from the source material.) Evie (Evora) is a young girl who is on her way to be a fairly talented physician when her world turns upside down.  Her best friend Wormy (Warwick) decides to propose to her, and sensing a proposal, the Fairy Godmother Lucinda shows up.  When Evie says “Thanks, but no thanks,” Lucinda turns her into an ogre, with a time limit of 62 days […]

Thanks, Loubear!

December 17, 2018 by crystalclear 1 Comment

Thank you, Loubear! (And mom scootsa1000!)  These two have been on my TBR list for a while now, so I’m excited for the chance to read them!  I do have a pile of Pride and Prejudice spinoff books, so maybe I’ll try to read and review them all…

Cannonball! And Blackout Bingo!

November 28, 2018 by crystalclear 7 Comments

This is the first Rainbow Rowell book I’ve read, despite owning Carry On.  (I’ve been waiting to read that with faintingviolet, and she’s been waiting because it was the last one she hasn’t read, but now that the sequel is coming out…)   Lincoln works the late shift working as a technology officer at a newspaper.  His job is to be the night-shift IT guy and to monitor the staff emails. He comes across frequent email exchanges between two friends, Jennifer and Beth, emails that […]

Stay Gold

November 25, 2018 by crystalclear 1 Comment

I never read The Outsiders in school, and I know it’s part of the Language Arts curriculum now in some schools.  My students were reading it today for class, so I decided to join them! The kids really seemed to like it – they were all actually silently reading, which for a class of eighth graders with a substitute is fairly impressive. At first I didn’t think I was going to like it all that much.  It’s not the type of thing I usually choose […]

I would have less rage watching this, because I would not have to experience the awful stage directions!

I’m a big Harry Potter fan.  I went to the midnight book and movie releases, I have Harry Potter merch, I know what house I’m in. (Gryffindor who wants to be a Hufflepuff, in case you were wondering.)  So I bought this when it first came out. Did I read it? No. And I don’t have very high expectations going into it. Because I’m the Harry Potter fan who reads fanfiction.  I’ve been reading fanfiction for over 10 years.  And in those 10+ years, I’ve […]

Be careful what you wish for…

This is a Cinderella tale told from the point of view of one of the ‘ugly’ stepsisters.  In the original story, Cinderella’s father married and brought his new wife and stepdaughters to his home.  The stepsisters were spoiled and enjoyed privileges that Cinderella did not, and lived a life of leisure. Not so in this version.  Here, the Jane and Maude Montjoy are the sisters.  They live in a dilapidated house and do all of the chores to try to survive.  Their mother is set […]
