Cinderella is Dead (RIP)

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

June 21, 2023 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Cinderella gets a Handmaid’s Tale twist for a YA Audience in Bayron’s book, with a queer protagonist too! It has been 200 years since Cinderella got her “Happily Ever After” in the kingdom of Lille.  Her story is now essentially the kingdom’s Bible, but very few people in Lille get to share in a happily ever after of their own. The kingdom is ruled by a cruel king, whose rulebook is a patriarchal nightmare. Curfews for female residents and no freedoms of which to speak; […]

Good Boy, Good Book

Rez Dogs by Joseph Bruchac

June 14, 2023 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

This is a happy dog story! Malian (which is pronounced “Mary-Ann” in Wabanaki language) is visiting her grandparents on their Wabanaki reservation when shelter-in-place orders go into effect for the COVID-19 pandemic.  What was supposed to be a brief visit becomes a long stay, with Malian trying to keep up with Zoom middle school on the rez’s spotty wi-fi and trying to keep her elderly family members safe. Malian isn’t the only unexpected visitor to the rez; a beautiful, mysterious dog shows up and makes […]

Bird families and our own

A Bird Will Soar by Alison Green Myers

June 4, 2023 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Axel is fascinated with an eagle family nesting in the woods behind his house. He loves all birds and everything about them, but checking in daily on the eaglet (eaglets?) and their parents is particularly meaningful. When a tornado decimates Axel’s neighborhood and injures one of the eaglets, his world is rocked. Under the capable hands of the local wildlife rehabilitation vet, Axel hopes the bird will heal. And in the meantime, his own broken family attempts to piece their home and their lives back […]

red cover of the book of lost things

“He will say less than he means, and conceal more than he reveals.”

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

July 20, 2021 by cosbrarian 1 Comment

Don’t loan me books. I am overwhelmed by them, and my guilt at holding onto your artifact will not affect my scattered method of attacking my TBR. I have had this book for twelve years. I am a bad book friend! But it was worth the wait? The Book of Lost Things is about David, a twelve-year-old in WWII-era England who has recently lost his mother.  His father remarries, and his new wife is kind, but David cannot help but resent her, and this resentment […]

A thoughtful mix of poetry and fairy tales

The Seventh Raven by David Elliott

July 6, 2021 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

The Seven Ravens is a cool fairy tale. It’s very similar to The Six Swans – both are categorized as “brothers who turn into birds” folktales. But I prefer The Seven Ravens. It focuses on a peasant family instead of a princess.  The parents are lovely people – no evil stepmothers or greedy fathers here.  A brave girl saves the day. And ravens are cooler than swans. Sorry, swans. If you don’t know the folktale, it is the story of a peasant couple who have […]

cover of graphic novel The magic fish

“The space between two shores is the ocean and being caught in between feels like drowning.”

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen

April 21, 2021 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

A new forever favorite! If you like your fairy tales dark, and reading other cultural versions of them, read this book! If you like your graphic novels lush, detailed, and darling, read this book! If you like compelling family stories, immigrant stories, and queer characters, read this book! In the forefront of Trung Le Nguyen’s graphic novel is the story of a middle schooler named Tiên who is quietly dealing with coming out and his crush on a friend.  Alongside that is his mother’s story, […]
