The Lifters by Dave Eggers

cbr11bingo:  Readers Choice (swapping in the COLLECTION square) Twelve-year-old Granite Flowerpetal doesn’t love his name, even though his father named him Granite to grant him strength. He tries to rebrand himself as “Gran” and while it does take on, he quickly has second thoughts. But his new identity is only one piece of his jumbled up life.  His parents, seeking new work for his father, have moved them to the Flowerpot family hometown and house, in a town whimsically named Carousel after the craft of […]

Agatha Christie: the Lost Plays by Agatha Christie

September 4, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

cbr11bingo – Classics Hope this counts! I have a hard time keeping my attention on most of the classics, so I looked for a full-cast audio of something fairly light, and this one was quickly available on Overdrive. In 2015, the BBC rereleased these three plays of Christie’s that were thought to be lost. The audio also includes an interview with the author, the cast of the Mouse Trap, and with the lone radio actor who was still alive when the collection was published. The […]

All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation by Rebecca Traister

September 3, 2019 by cosbrarian 3 Comments

#cbr11bingo – Not My Wheelhouse My usual reading is children and teen fiction or comic books, so I figured adult non-fiction would be a good opposite for me.  But in order to get through that I did pick a subject I am interested in. I have been quite single for most of my life, and lately I’ve been feeling particularly odd-woman out amongst my throngs of married friends and acquaintances.  I tried Kate Bolick’s Spinster and sort of hated it.  But this one held more promise […]

Killer Style: How Fashion Has Injured, Maimed, and Murdered Through History by Alison Matthews David, Serah Marie McMahon

August 26, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

#CBR11Bingo – History/Schmistory! Killer Style is a quick read for anyone interested in fashion history. It is geared towards tweens and teens, but the information is great for older readers too.  The book accounts different ways that clothes have been dangerous to people. The authors lean less on freak accidents and more on how industrialization and the clothing construction industry have killed people in the making of clothes.  (We do get our fair share of freak accidents, though.) We get information from the ways poisonous […]

Not too many “secrets” but enjoyable nonetheless.

The Secret Life of the American Musical by Jack Viertel

August 26, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

#CBR11Bingo – I love this! Recently I’ve been enjoying a podcast dedicated to musical theatre and reliving my theatre kid days. So this audiobook seemed a good fit for my “I Love This!” category, as I do indeed love Broadway musicals. Jack Viertel has been involved in over 50 Broadway productions in various capacities, but mostly as a dramaturg and consultant on the writing end.  He teaches a course at NYU about the construction of the American musical, and that is what this book is […]

“In the name of King Arthur, and of the old world before the dark came.”

Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper

August 14, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

CBRBingo11 – Back to School! I’ve read this book about 800 times. The first time I read it was with my fifth grade class, and I’ll forever thank Mrs Cook for introducing us to this wonderful story. I blasted through the rest of the five-book “sequence” after that and it remains my favorite middle grade series (before middle grade was a thing). This year I am participating once again in the Dark is Rising readathon  and so it also made sense for this to be […]
