So Close to Awesome

December 29, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

The Circle by Dave Eggers, is an interesting, if slightly obvious premise. A clear play on the power of the major players in the social media and technology business (google, Facebook etc.), the Circle is a look at the terrifying possibility of a total global takeover by these companies, and how it could happen with the general consent of the people. The story focuses on Mae Holland, a recent graduate who lands a coveted entry level position working for the Circle, a major technology firm that got its […]

The Last Anniversary

December 29, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

The Last Anniversary was my last stop on the Lianne Moriarty tour. It was yet another interesting and different story, though I didn’t love it as much as theHypnotist’s Love Story.* The story focuses on Sophie Honeywell, a single woman in her late thirties feeling the full weight of her biological clock. Sophie is known for being a great friend, always willing to entertain her couple friends with her single girl exploits, and up for whatever romantic adventure she encounters. Still, despite her rich social life, Sophie […]

My Favourite Lianne Moriarty book.

December 29, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

After reading three Liane Moriarty books, I decided to just keep going with the same author for awhile, and as it turns out, The Hypnotist’s Love Story is my favourite. It has the same fantastic tension as Big Little Lies, while maintaining Moriarty’s sense of humour and strong character development. This is not your average story and the plot, characters, and writing are completely original. The hypnotist, Ellen O’Farrell, has watched as her friends slowly paired off and have children. She’s watched love stories and stories of personal triumph unfold […]

What Alice Forgot

December 29, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

One of my favourite soap opera tropes is the use of amnesia as a way to clear the decks and move an otherwise stale character forward. However, now that I’m no longer watching soap operas because my husband won’t let me have cable I’m a contributing member of society who is above such nonsense, I occasionally need to get my fix of silly plots from books and netflix. When I saw that What Alive Forgot is both by Liane Moriarty and focusses on amnesia, I absolutely had to […]

Big Little Lies – much better than the Huband’s Secret

December 24, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

Earlier this year, I read the Husband’s Secret. Given the strong reviews, I expected to enjoy it far more than I did. Instead, I found the characters stereotypical and the conclusion lacking. In spite of this, after hearing great things about it, I decided to read Big Little Liesanyways and am I ever glad I did. Like The Husband’s Secret, the story explores the hidden intrigues of parents at a seemingly wholesome school. While there may seem to be some overlap between the two books, because they’re both about […]

The Silkworm – Rowling gets dark

December 24, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

Wow, JK Rowling can go dark. Like really, seriously dark. The Silkworm, is Rowling’s follow-up to Cuckoo’s Calling, continuing the story of Cormoran Strike and his now permanent assistant Robin. When Mrs. Quine comes into the agency and asks Cormoran to looks into the whereabouts of her wandering husband, Cormoran takes the case partially to annoy a self-important client he had been meeting with, and partially because he couldn’t help but feel for the odd yet compelling woman. A novelist and serial adulterer, Mr. Quine has a pattern of leaving […]
