CoffeeShopReader's Reviews:

I read this to spare you all. You’re welcome. Unless you like bad paranormal romance.

Bitten by Kelly Armstrong

April 1, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I decided to request Bitten from the local library because I’d seen it on a list of good fantasy series. I’m so very glad I did that. Got it from the library that is. This book is the epitome of everything that people don’t like about paranormal romance. I’m almost tempted to throw it in the river and save everyone else who may check it out the experience; I won’t because that’s destruction of library property (and therefore bad on principle) and the book’s not […]

Wasted Possibilities Are Frustating

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

March 31, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Complaint 1: They Both Die At The End has a misleading title. Several people do die as forecasted but not necessarily the expected ‘they’ at the expected time. More than this would be spoilers. The idea is that in this world, there is a company that calls you on the day you die to tell you that you’ll die that die. They have a script, and then it’s up to you to do what you need/want to do on your last day of life. The […]

Eating By Yourself Can Be Cool

Solo: A Modern Cookbook for a Party of One by Anita Lo

March 31, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I would really like to meet Anita Lo some day. I’ve seen her on a few competition cooking shows, but this is the first cookbook of hers I’ve gone and picked up. Solo: A Modern Cookbook for a Party of One is pretty unique in that it not only focuses on small batch recipes as well as how to use as much of certain ingredients as possible (sometimes saving for another day or recipe), but also is very direct about eating by oneself. I’ve seen […]

Four Voices, but Two Left Out, Fifth Unknown

Blackfish City by Sam J. Miller

March 24, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It took me a little while to get into Blackfish City thanks to the narrative style, but in the end that turned out to be one of the strengths on the novel. The basic premise is that there are a handful of people wandering around the floating city of Qaanaaq who eventually discover their connections to each other, as well as to a mysterious stranger who shows up riding on an orca, accompanied by a polar bear. The story is told through their alternating perspectives. […]

American Advertising Cookbooks: How Corporations Taught Us to Love Spam, Bananas, and Jell-O by Christina Ward

March 23, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was so excited for this book. I like cookbooks and I like vintage books. American Advertising Cookbooks: How Corporations Taught Us to Love Spam, Bananas, and Jell-O sounded so good. I think maybe I let my expectations get the better of me, because in the end I was a little disappointed. This book has pictures, which are really interesting and pretty, mostly of old cookbooks and recipes in said books. One problem is that the pictures either don’t match the words on the current […]

Part 2 of the trilogy is the worst, even in book 3

The Dragon Lords Bad Faith by Jon Hollis

March 23, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

The Dragon Lords: Bad Faith is divided into 3 parts, and is itself part 3 of a trilogy. I rather enjoyed part 1 (Fools Gold), hated part 2 (False Idols), and part 3 was kind of meh. It wasn’t as bad as part 2 with no one to root for, and it added some good characterization and a few new characters, but it was also 200 pages too long. The second part of the book is ironically yet appropriately titled “Bad Decisions”, one of which […]
