Common High School Tropes But Stays Classy about Anxiety

Komi Can't Communicate, vols. 1-2 by Tomohito Oda

February 8, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

This is kind of a two-fer. I’ve seen some reviews or ads for Komi Can’t Communicate, so when I saw the first two volumes at a library, I felt I had to try them. The premise is actually a little interesting, which strikes me as a little unusual for a manga about high school kids in a non-fantasy setting. Tadano wants to get through high school without drawing attention. Komi is the school beauty queen. One would expect for them to connect because that’s just […]

The fluff that almost, almost got interesting

Mooncakes by Wendy Xu, Suzanne Walker

February 1, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Mooncakes is a fluffy light read, but it could have been so much more. Like a lot of the graphic novels I tend to pick up, this one features a fairly YA story about 2 queer characters probably in their late teens who have something supernatural about them, and they must face some sort of supernatural problem while dealing with their mutual attraction to each other. Nova is a witch in training, and Tam is her werewolf childhood friend/possibly something more who moved away but […]

Content advisory, some graphic, some cute

Tiny but Mighty by Hannah Shaw

February 1, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

If you are sensitive to detailed descriptions of various illnesses baby cats can get, charts and verbal descriptions of poop, blood and other bodily fluids, pictures of kitty rear-ends (used to illustrate how to tell a male from a female), kittens not surviving some rough things, then you may not want to read Tiny but Mighty: Kitten Lady’s Guide to Saving the Most Vulnerable Felines. If you like pictures of baby kitties (often in colorful paper hats), many success stories of little kitties surviving against […]

If the best thing is the preview to other stuff…

Lumberjanes The Shape of Friendship by Lilah Sturges

January 26, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I wouldn’t have known this if I had not noticed the back of the book, but apparently Lumberjanes: The Shape of Friendship is the sequel to The Infernal Compass. There is very little in the story to show the two are actually connected in any other way than featuring the same general setting and cast of characters. I actually like the ideas introduced to the Lumberjane universe in The Infernal Compass, and I’m a little sad that those elements got no more development; I hope […]

First big find of 2020!

Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire

January 26, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Potential favorite new author alert! I had heard of Seanan McGuire before; I saw something related to one of her more recent novels (Middlegame) which got my attention and now physically sits on my TBR bookcase. That is a longer book though and right now I don’t really have the time or energy, so instead I put in a request at my local library for Sparrow Hill Road. I had seen the sequel in a bookstore and thought it looked really interesting but I figured […]

A problem of too much cake and spoilers

The Big Book of Amazing Cakes by The Baking Show Team

January 19, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I am a little bit glad that Netflix now runs the most current Great British Baking Show because I don’t have to worry as much about spoilers and cookbooks. A few seasons/years ago, I had to be out of town for about two weeks in the middle of when a season was airing, ended up in a bookstore in London, and found out that Nadiya had won the season because she had a new cookbook out on display. This past season I also got spoiler-ed […]
