When the poet laureate comes to town

In Mad Love and War by Joy Harjo

February 18, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I don’t usually read poetry collections for funsies, or much at all really. But when the Poet Laureate of the United States decided to do a talk/reading at the mid-level state school where I work, I made an exception. To decide if I wanted to brave the crowds, I got a copy of one of Joy Harjo’s collections In Mad Love and War from the library. I don’t often enjoy a lot of contemporary poetry; I’m a little too much of a formalist for that […]

Queer Eye Impulse Grab a the Library

Antoni in the Kitchen by Antoni Porowski

February 15, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I like cookbooks, both to use and to read. I also like the tv show Queer Eye, although I’m behind on the most recent season. I’ve seen and heard some things about the current food guy, Antoni, so when I saw his cookbook, I kind of had to pick it up and see. The biggest thing I was curious about was what kind of food does Antoni do when he’s not necessarily trying to show someone the basics? The biggest critique on him I noticed […]

Oversugared for Valentine’s Day

Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

February 15, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I had a hard time deciding my Valentine’s Day reading this year: either start C.L. Polk’s new book which actually is a romance (among other things) or continue the Wayward Children series. I went with continue the current series because I wanted to know what happens next. Beneath the Sugar Sky picks up where the first book leaves off, at Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children, apparently not too long after the events of the first book. Several key characters are still there including Kade […]

Jack and Jill the backstory

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

February 15, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I half succeeded at a library run the other day. I did succeed at getting the next 3 Wayward Children books, but failed to get any more of a manga series I’d grabbed the first 3 of on a whim; at some point in 2 days someone took volumes 4-12. Now I’ve gotta wait at least 2 weeks on those. At least I had Down Among the Sticks and Bones to make up for it. Volume 2 of the Wayward Children series is basically the […]

Wanting to go back down the rabbit hole

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

February 12, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It’s official: Seanan McGuire is my new favorite. After really enjoying Sparrow Road and then realizing I’d have to wait a near-eternity (or maybe it just seems like it) to get the sequel from the library, I found on the shelves Every Heart A Doorway, first in another series (Wayward Children) by the same author. The basic premise is intriguing: what happens to the people who find their way into fairy tale worlds (like Alice in Wonderland etc) but then end up back in their […]

In which side characters are the real ones

The Alchemist Who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life, Vol. 2 (light novel) by Usata Nonhora

February 8, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Light novel 2 in The Alchemist Who Survived Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life really develops the world and some of the characters. Some darkness is introduced and more history about the status of alchemy and alchemists, and the Labyrinth, is really the focus of the volume. This means both more story and more world building. The biggest problem from book 1 gets a little worse in book 2 though, and that’s Mariela. She’s supposed to be the main heroine, but she’s totally […]
