Lumberjanes do Friendship to the Max Indoors and Out

Lumberjanes (vols. 13-14) by Shannon Watters, Kat Leyh, Dozerdraws

August 2, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo review 14: Friendship Since a tagline for the series is “Friendship to the Max!”, I figure Lumberjanes vols. 13-14 counts for the Friendship square. After a few shaky installments, it feels like the Lumberjanes series is getting its groove back a little. For those unfamiliar, this is a comic book series that follows a group of girls who become friends at the Lubmerjanes summer camp aka “Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types”. April’s the leader go-getter type, Jo’s the smart […]

The Gangster Way to do Household Work

The Way of the Househusband (vol. 1) by Kousuke Oono

August 2, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo review 13: Happy Some years ago, I had moved cross country for my first full-time job after finishing school (at least for the time being) and one thing that I started turning to for comfort from the stresses of a new job in a new area away from home was manga. Longish story short, it started with a magazine in the grocery store and grew from there. Ever since, manga has been a go-to for a feel-better read. I recently picked up The Way […]

A Ghost in a Green Gown

The Girl in The Green Silk Gown by Seanan McGuire

July 31, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

Bingo review 12: Green In some ways, The Girl in the Green Silk Gown was actually my introduction to Seanan McGuire; it was the first book of hers that drew my interest, but it wasn’t the first thing of hers that I read. I’m just only now getting to it. It turns out the titular green dress actually has some meaning in the story, but it’s also a handy reason to use it for this bingo square. This is book two about Rose Marshall, who […]

The Intersectional Autobiographical Approach to Understanding Racism

How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

July 24, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo review 10: Book Club I work at a regional state university. Earlier this summer, we got an email containing a book club invitation that will begin a series of events designed to reflect each of the institution’s official values. Ibram X. Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist was chosen in association with “adaptability”, and probably also in association with the current focus on race and racism in the US. According to the accompanying flyer, this group will meet monthly throughout the fall semester digitally, […]

Thank goodness I didn’t read this debut first

The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab

July 24, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo review 9: Debut My first encounter with V.E. Schwab was Vicious, her break-out best-seller hit. This led me to A Darker Shade of Magic, and the rest as they say was history. I was intrigued when she announced that her original debut novel The Near Witch was going to be re-published. I didn’t especially enjoy this one; the basic plot and characters are too predictable and it’s written in first person present tense, one of my least favorites. The plot and characters are obviously […]

The least orange-y orange, maybe ever

Orange by Ichigo Takano

July 22, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo Review 8: Orange This is a review of a book titled Orange. Actually the full title is Orange: The Complete Collection 2. In terms of genre, it’s part 2 of a manga story told in two 2-inch thick volumes. The basic story is that there’s a set of 5 high school friends who take a new student into their group to become an even 3 girls and 3 guys. They all become bestest buddies, but one day one of the girls, Naho, gets a […]
