When Marvel Gets a Little Real

Ms. Marvel, vols.1-7 by G. Willow Wilson, Mirka Andolfo, Takeshi Miyazawa, Ian Herring

October 10, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

To be totally honest, Marvel and DC aren’t a major geekdom of mine. But upon recommendations, first by friends IRL and again here at CannonballReads, I started the Ms. Marvel series by G. Willow Wilson et al. The library had the first 8 volumes, then a skip then a volume then skip one or two, so for now until I can get some blanks filled in I’m limited to volumes 1-7; I haven’t finished 8 yet. I’ll get that one in the next batch. I […]

When Fan-Fic Sticks the Ending Better then the Original

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

October 3, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo Just Because: Reader’s Choice Even though I’ve already posted the review to fill in my bingo card, I still wanted to do this out of stubbornness, and because I have another book finished that would have probably ended up in this square anyways. So, Any Way the Wind Blows is the finale of the Simon Snow trilogy, the Harry Potter fan-fic originally created for the stand-alone novel Fangirl, which was actually my introduction to the author Rainbow Rowell. I have to admit, in spite […]

Bingo Blackout with Chrysanthemums!

Chrysanthemums by Twigs Way

October 3, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 25: Flora I have to admit I was starting to despair about having to use a gardening book from the library which didn’t interest me for the Flora square, but then I found this: In case you can’t see under the library sticker, the title is Chrysanthemums. Also, am I the only one wondering if that’s a pen name or just really fortuitous coincidence for the author? This is supposed to be a cultural and horticultural history, which is super interesting since I know […]

A monk and a robot go camping with a tea cart in search of crickets

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

September 26, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 24: Travel A Psalm for the Wild Built is a travel story in both the literal and metaphorical sense. The monk, Sibling Dex, has lived most of their life in The City but they have this sudden urge to try and find crickets to listen to. To do this, they first decide to become a travelling tea monk. Then they decide that they need to go off into the real wilds of the world to find crickets, since they have found success with the […]

How to balance social justice, politics, lost love, and maybe more

Soulstar by C. L. Polk

September 26, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 23: They She He I have to admit, I think I saw C.L. Polk saying on social media she/they (both pronouns are noted in the bio at the back of the book) was either non-binary or bisexual, or maybe both? Thing is, I’m not sure, but it turns out it didn’t matter and I can use Soulstar for this square anyways, as one of the main new characters is most certainly non-binary. Soulstar is the final of the Kingston Cycle trilogy, each of which […]

So not written for me, but that’s maybe the point

Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

September 18, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 22: Uncannon Reason 1 Black Water Sister should be taught: It’s based entirely in the author’s personal background, Malaysian with some Western influence. The story follows Jessamyn/Jess whose legal name is something a lot more culturally specific (it’s only mentioned once and I couldn’t find the bit where Jess mentions it), is a queer woman in her early 20s moving from the US back to Malaysia with her parents because her dad got a job there. I wouldn’t have known this if I hadn’t […]
