Murderbot does the tv detective partner thing

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

November 26, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Fugitive Telemetry is basically ‘Murderbot does a murder mystery in a cop-outside expert tv episode’, with Murderbot being the outside expert, Station Security represented mostly by Indah who doesn’t want/trust the outsider, and a bit of a locked-door mystery as to who the dead person is, how and why they were killed all unknown. Besides the usual entertaining Murderbot snarkiness, there is a little bit of world building on Preservation Station, more in the setting sense and a little bit of cultural background. There also […]

A Plague of Monsters and maybe Magic

The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giebrecht

November 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have to honest and admit that I did not read this  thoroughly, more like slow skimmed. The Monster of Elendhaven was described as “dark”, “humorous”, “rotten with magic”; these descriptors match some things I’ve read and enjoyed. This novella is most definitely more the ‘dark’, as in horror. The setting is Elendhaven, somewhere around the North Pole, where some sort of seriously nasty plague caused by a magic eruption of some sort that either kills people or essentially mutates the survivors. Being a sorcerer […]

The heroine should stay feisty; no fainting allowed!

Kakuriyo Bed and Breakfast for Spirits vol 6 by Waco Ioka, Midori Yuma, Laruha

November 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’d almost figured that the Kakuriyo manga had either been stalled indefinitely or cancelled; it’s been about a year I think since the current volume was out (#6) but I saw recently that there’s volume 7 coming; I liked the anime version of the story so I’m hoping that the written version continues, although it so far is nearly the same as the animated. The basic premise is that college student Aoi inherited the ability to see ghosts and spirits from her grandad who took […]

Cursing Cookbooks with some History

Bad Manners Brave New Meal by Bad Manners LLC

November 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I read a lot of cookbooks; if there’s one I like and the author has more, I get my hands on them. Once upon a time, I found a cookbook based on a blog/web-site I’d never heard of called Thug Kitchen; it was a vegan cookbook that used a lot of 4-letter curse words, and it had a lot of recipes that I enjoyed. Books 2 and 3 were ok, but I never liked the recipes as well as the original. Then there were no […]

Bake it Better: Pies, Tarts & Puddings by Angela Nilsen, Jayne Cross

November 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I think I mentioned a long while ago that my mother had bought a bunch of cookbooks on sale as Christmas gifts, and then misplaced the bag for a few years, then found it. I have finally completed the last of these, and it might just be the best. I have been a fan of the Great British Bake Off (or Baking Show in the US, but The Great British Bake Off Bake It Better: Pies, Tarts & Puddings is of UK origin so we’ll […]

A somehow really boring corporate espionage technology thriller

Agency by William Gibson

November 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I have attempted William Gibson before; I did not enjoy Neuromancer at all. But Agency is considerably more recent and the premise made more sense to me. Basically, Verity is an app developer/tester who is brought on to field test “Eunice” an AI assistant of sorts, but Verity realizes there’s a good bit more to Eunice than anyone seems to have guessed, and soon mysterious corporate shenanigans are afoot, and there is some involvement from parallel universes, one of which has the technology to keep […]
