The Right Kind of Cliff Hanger Transition

Noragami vol 25 by Adachitoka

April 16, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

There are not a lot of fight-based manga or anime (and a lot of general adventure ones that can drift into this category as well) that I can think off that I’ve genuinely followed the entire way through; I almost always get tired of the never-ending formulaic exchanges, both plot and dialogue. I was starting to wonder if Noragami had not started to go that way, but volume 25 has save the story for me, at least for now. What looks like a major potentially […]

Too tropey high school survivalist story makes me feel old

Classroom of the Elite vols 1-5 by Yuyu Ichino, Syougo Kinugasa

April 2, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Classroom of the Elite might be a sign that I’m getting too old for some things. In particular, the high school set manga in which the kids are allowed to rule their schools, even to the extent of life and death (kind of but probably not really) competitions for status. The Advanced Nurturing High School (ironically named, at least to me) seemingly encourages a cut-throat atmosphere where the graduates are basically guaranteed good college, good job, etc. Naturally, most of our characters are in the […]

It Costs A Lot to Eat this Sweet

Bakerita by Rachel Connors

April 2, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

This year for my birthday I decided to bake myself something in part because my freezer is still full from the sourdough baking times of about two months ago and I usually go for a small ice cream cake. I was assisted by a library find I may now have to purchase: Bakerita (of the blog of same name). The general premise is supposed healthier baked treats in that mostly natural less processed ingredients are featured, as are quite a few gluten-free and vegan options. […]

Boards get the ATK Treatment but it’s Boring-ish

Boards: Stylish Spreads for Casual Gatherings by America's Test Kitchen, Elle Simone Scott

March 19, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

One more board book review because it’s birthday month and I found one in the library I’d eyed in the bookstore recently. I suppose it was only a matter of time that America’s Test Kitchen would get in on this trend, especially since the whole board thing has lasted more than a year with Boards: Stylish Spreads for Casual Gatherings. One of the main things I like about them is that the whole premise of ATK is to figure out not just what works, but […]

Last of the Lumberjanes

Lumberjanes: End of Summer Adventure by Shannon Watters, Kat Leygh

March 19, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So it turns out the Lumberjanes series has reached its conclusion with volume 20: “End of Summer Adventure”. This series has had ups and downs and I think the conclusion is a little mixed. On the one hand, the questions that really need answering are resolved. For example, what’s up with Rosie, what’s really going on in the forest around the camp, and what’s the spooky bad thing that got released a volume or two ago. But then again, the actual reveals are kind of […]

Yer a killer, Cliff!

Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes

March 12, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader 5 Comments

It took me a bit longer to read Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide than I’d figured initially. This is actually a pretty interesting and entertaining murder mystery where the mystery is not who dies or who dunnit; it’s how the would be ‘deletist’ (we don’t say ‘killer’ here) will achieve their goal while not getting caught and still observing the 4 main principles of ‘deletion’ (we don’t’ say ‘murder’):  Is this murder necessary? Have you given your target every last chance to […]
